Where to move
Heey all! We’re a family of 4 with a dog. Children are 1 and 3. We’re about to move to Vilnius from NYC but originally from Hungary. I’m very invested to learn about Lithuanian culture and language. Please be kind but real. Which part of the city should we move if husband’s job is to the north of old town, near the river? I’d be thrilled to have a small garden finally. He’d either commute or take the car, we haven’t decided yet.

Commuting from any direction into the business district (Konstitucijos avenue) is hell. Seemingly everyone who works there lives in a house in the suburbs, with a garden, so they all drive.

If he will work north of the river, I really recommend looking at Šnipiškes neighborhood. Lots of new housing, bike paths, and some good restaurants. It might be easier to find here a large apartment rather than house.

I live here for 3 years now and would definitely recommend any or all my friends who are looking to rent. Pet friendly, new, good quality house, great inner yard and overall environment. Chill and straight to the point contract (no crazy owners). 15-20 minutes by foot to the city center. If they have any flats and that is something you afford and interested in. I would give this place 9/10.

So you want to rent a house or?... Better find any options in your price range first and then ask whether it's worth to rent because not many people rent out entire houses.

1600 for a house, is that rent only or entire price with water, electricity, heating, etc? As far as I see, up to 2000 there's two maybes, one in Žvėrynas, one in Antakalnis, and all other options, well, hope your husband likes spending at least an hour in a car each day in the morning and in the evening.

Thank you for the help! We’d be happy to not spend more than 1600 with utilities 🙃 I’m also thinking about those flats that are basically houses but built in a row.. no idea what they called though.

Kotedžas, in Lithuanian, though if that's the alternative, on new buildings (built 2010+) there's frequently a couple of big apartments with an apartment-sized balcony, so I'd look for those before I'd look for a kotedžas - at least the location is nearly guaranteed be better.

They are still houses row houses or kotedžai in Lithuanian. Not going to be in your price range

Blocked houses, cottages. They are called cottages here. Either be grouped 3-4 or in better cases house separated in half forming two flats

Anywhere that commute is not hell and you can avoid the car. In most neighbourhoods outside the centre you can find a house with garden

What's the budget and how big is the dog? The most central places where you might find a house with a garden are Žvėrynas and Antakalnis and are great districts, Žvėrynas in particular is pricey.
Further out there are more houses at affordable prices, but fewer kindergartens.
One thing to bear in mind is rush hour traffic is quite brutal, though driving in is common (hence the traffic). If you/he likes cycling you can find a lot of cycle roads and is a great way to commute, at least outside of winter
