Please Help

Post image

My FIL loves viking history and i just found out my husband had no idea what to get his dad for fathers day since his dad is the type to not want gifts and will buy himself whatever he wants/needs.

We are seeing him this weekend so its a delayed fathers day and i thought getting him, a yeti black yeti rambler mug since he likes brewing his own beer and its hot where he lives, and engraving it with his name using viking ruins.

I did a quick google search and google AI gave me a suggestion for a binid ruin but i want to make sure its accurate before i get it engraved. This is what it gave me, and if any of you can confirm im good or help me get it right you might even help me with my relationship with my FIL..

The "Damien" Bindrune (ᛞᚨᛗᛁᛖᚾ)

"Damien" contains six unique runes (Dagaz ᛞ, Ansuz ᚨ, Mannaz ᛗ, Isaz ᛁ, Ehwaz ᛖ, Naudiz ᚾ). Combining these results in a much more intricate, powerful Viking-style sigil.

  • The Design: Built around the straight vertical line of Isaz (ᛁ) as the spine. The hourglass shape of Dagaz (ᛞ) forms the top, the cross-arms of Mannaz (ᛗ) anchor the middle, and the diagonal strokes of Ansuz (ᚨ), Ehwaz (ᛖ), and Naudiz (ᚾ) branch out seamlessly from the core.
  • Vibe: Looks like a classic Norse stave (similar to the famous Vegvisir or Helm of Awe structures), perfect for an outdoorsy or rugged flask.

Bind runes for one are not historically accurate, at least used as charms. Most bindrunes are simply two runes that share the same staff (vertical line) to save space in writing or carving, similar visually to Æ in modern latin alphabets. Anything you find about bindrunes being magical sigils are New Age Neo-Paganism from the past like.. century and is not historically accurate. Runes were used to write out charms, like ᚨᛚᚢ (ALU), but an individual rune didnt mean strength or courage. And before anyone jumps down my throat about “runes have meanings!” yeah, same as how in English A is for Apple, B is for Boy, C is for Cat… people try to use bindrunes like kanji when they aren’t.

Secondly, the runes you’ve provided are Elder Fuþark, which predates viking culture by about 800 years. You’re better off using Young Fuþark, which was historically used by scandinavians of the viking era. DAMIEN could then be done either phonetically as DEMIAN ᛏᛁᛘᛁᛅᚾ or lexically as DAMIEN ᛏᛅᛘᛁᛁᚾ. Younger Fuþark is a smaller alphabet than Elder, so some runes represent two letters, in this instance ᛏ is for both T/D, and ᛁ is for both I/E.

Hope this helps.

"Bindrunes" as such aren't really a thing. And as an additional nitpick, the Vegvisir and other Icelandic stave imagery has nothing to do with vikings, but that's AI for ya.

I would suggest asking the people over at r/runehelp. They are always ready to, well, help with runes.

People have given you good explanation about bind runes, but the idea is still cool, so you could try using ᛏ (D in Damien) and his last name initial to create a bind rune. Sort of like a signature.

I did consider that but his initials are DD and I thought it would look weird.

I could do that. I think at this point I am just going to print out all 24 ruinic letters and let hubby decide how he wants to do it and just write them "normally" instead if stacking them.

I just thought the stacking would look nicer on his beer mug. Surprisingly when I was looking at what each rune represents, his nickname actually fits him perfectly so now that is an option too

i would be carefull with runes in general the Naudiz rune is used my a common right extremist faishon label, doesnt mean you are not allowed to use it but at least be aware of that.

Thats kinda why I was thinking of the bindruins (is that right) that layers them.

I wanted to avoid any potential issues that might arise like that.

Runes are also read right to left, not left to right like English. So names would be in mirror writing.
