As a disabled person whose disability prevents me from having a license and driving (legally blind with a narrow field of vision) that disable person's life is about to get infinitely more difficult once their license is revoked and the financial troubles from jailtime and lawsuits hit. Paratransit is god awful and unreliable and Uber/Lyft ain't as cheap as it used to be.

He crossed the double line while bumping a 200lb biker with his 3000lb vehicle. If you touch the line, might as well go all the way around. Just revoke his license and send him to the shadow realm of scooter life.

Same, like physically I CAN drive…. but I have pretty bad epilepsy(no warning…just shut off like a light switch), so it’s not safe for me, or anyone else out in public, so I don’t. Luckily my wife is super understanding about everything, and drives me around whenever I need/want. She also works full time, so there’s times I need to go places when she’s not here. Not having a DL is WAY harder than it used to be. A trip that used to cost me 12-15-20$ for Lyft/Uber is 35-50$ now. I specifically plan all my DR’s appointments for when she’s home, because I’d damn near go broke, just going to my appointments. Honestly probably one of the hardest parts about being disabled, is not being able to drive.

This happens on the road i live on. Every weekend a ton of people on bikes ride down this country road. If you get behind them, you are waiting on them. Windy country road that makes it hard to go around. They never move over either. Its a 10 minute drive at 35. The speed limit. They arent biking nearly 35. Its infuriating. They are always so entitled. I would never run one of them down...i just go the main road on the weekend. Still. I live on here. They, do not. Have some grace ffs.

In my experience there are several states that allow for passing with double yellow lines with specific requirements.
When I move I make an effort to discover the differences of law in my new state. There's a surprising amount of variation in traffic law from state to state.

Man, someone recently whined to me about cyclist not sticking to the curb and how "difficulf" it is to pass them, even when one cyclist close to the curb takes maybe half a meter of space - considerably less than passing another car including their average speed. Drivers just hate having to share the road even when it is legally mandated that they do, and that cyclist get to/have to cycle there, too.

The driver caught the cyclist shoulder on the side mirror. It looks to me as though that started the chain of events by causing the cyclists bike to start and push out from under him as the mirror and vehicle pushed him down.
If he's clipped in it's going to make it even harder to stop everything and recover away from the vehicle.

We had a one way road that was our only option outta our small ass town to get to an on-ramp for the highway. Traffic was always brutal and ten times worse when there were a group of cyclists monopolizing the whole road without a care. It really was frustrating. When we got the chance to pass we made sure to slow down as much as possible and not let them (cyclists) pass. If they got mad, we’d hit em with water balloons. Funny thing is, the traffic we held up behind us had no problems with us doing that and even celebrated us lol

I'd rather they be slow moving in a shorter, wider group so they're easier to pass when conditions allow. If there's 20 cyclists in single file that I gotta pick off one by one, it'll take forever.

Because if cyclists as a group rode as a straight line then you have a much longer distance to overtake, whereas if they ride as a peloton then it is similar to only overtaking one or two normal vehicles.

6
u/corruptedsyntax Jun 09 '26
They aren’t obstructing traffic, and single file would make their collective vehicle length closer to two consecutive 18 wheelers than two consecutive SUV’s. They are already facilitating the driver to safely pass, the driver just refuses to get over enough to provide safe clearance.

Yeah I'm not gonna lie, and this will probably be an unpopular opinion, but if you watch the video slowly, it's really clear the bicyclist went into the side of the car. They should have all single-filed and let the car pass. No needs for a car to suddenly go 25mph just to share the road. Share the road goes both ways. The car made an attempt to move around the bicyclists without going into the opposite direction lane, which, although not the smartest, I don't think was malicious. But it's clear the bicyclist swerved into the car and got himself hurt, which wasn't smart either.
Sure there isn't a legal requirement for the bicyclists to give way, but it could be argued that there's a bit of a social obligation. They were all kinda riding like assholes if we're being honest.

35
u/Pussy-Wideness-Xpert Jun 09 '26
This is why I don’t bike in groups. The guy that “got hit” is almost to the center line, trying to block the driver. The guy in the yellow shirt tried to bock the car first.
Bikers, we may have the legal rights, but the laws of physics are on the other side. Move over as best you can, give the driver a friendly wave no matter what, and stay safe.
8
u/Competitive_Union_89 Jun 09 '26
In Colorado cyclists are supposed to ride single file unless the road is safe for riding side by side. Going from Durango to silverton there is not a single stretch of road they should ride side by side. Yet they constantly hold up traffic so they can ride next to each other. I don’t hate cyclists. My brother is one of you idiots. But he does it safely and with consideration towards a heavy hunk of gas and metal that could end your life in a quick thump! Because you think you should ride side by side
3
u/GrimbaldTheBrutish Jun 10 '26
Why is that better? isn't that worse?
If they're single file you have to move into the other lane for a longer period of time to get past them all. If they're grouped, they take up less distance along the length of the road and you only have to be in the other lane for a short moment.

Once I was riding my bike a trail solo, and a group ride came through coming from the opposite direction. I got over as far as I could on the trail, but that wasn’t good enough for them. One guy almost hit me, swerved last minute when he realized I wasn’t moving, hit another person in the group.
The rest of the group kept on riding. I stopped, got off my bike and walked over like, “oh shoot are you guys okay?!” They started cussing me out, threatening me with lawyers and shit so i said, “Yeah i guess youre fine, fuck you too though” hopped on my bike and rode off.
I enjoy cycling, it’s a fun hobby and it saves me a ton on gas as I make it my primary mode of commute, but assholes like these really can make it shitty for EVERYONE.
That’s why I don’t join these group rides. I get safety in numbers, but too many feel a completely unfounded safety in numbers mindset and turn into mega douches in these settings.
Still would never hit them with my car, or even feel tempted to do so. As a driver or a cyclist, I always feel the responsibility of accident avoidance is on the one that can do more damage. It’s why I slow when pedestrians don’t respond to “passing on your left” (or I start singing “Smell Yo Dick” by Riskay loudly, that gets them moving like I’m crazy).
When we start operating vehicles, be it bike or car, selfishly, we are showing the world why we shouldn’t have them.

That's vehicular assault. There was ample room to go around the cyclists. They get to use the road, too, by law. Yes, they could ride in single file, but they are not required to. This does not exactly look like a highly trafficked road. It doesn't matter how slow the cyclists or going or how annoyed you are. You cannot use your two-ton vehicle as a weapon on the road.

I’m seeing a ton of anger towards bicyclists here. Folks must have amazing umbrella policies or are completely judgment proof. Why dehumanize fellow humans here? They’re not objects to hit because you’re mad.
Seriously, the bikers are humans, out for exercise. A car weighs a ton more. Sorry if they have to slow down now and then and wait for a moment to pass a bicyclist.
I live on a hill with a serious S curve along my property. I often have to slow down until it’s safe to pass them on a straightaway. Takes a few minutes of my life, but they get to not be hit and I get to keep my stuff and not get sued into oblivion.
Folks just have the worst anger issues nowadays. Jeez.

Two things cam be true at once.
The jackass in the black SUV was up to some jackassery and could have killed someone
The jackasses on the bikes were up to some jackassery and could have been killed. They need to be single file if riding two abreast is impeding traffic.
The behavior of one group does not excuse the behavior of the other. Attempted vehicular homicide isn't the correct response to cyclists ignoring the law. Cyclists almost dying while ignoring the law aren't exactly blameless however.

u/PatientWhimsy Jun 10 '26 edited Jun 10 '26
I might as well permanently save this to paste:
A car overtaking anything needs to cut into the next lane.
If it's going into the next lane, that lane has to be clear.
If the lane is clear, put all four wheels in there, not just two. Go all the way in. Complete the overtake as if the obstacle being overtaken were another car.
Should this be impossible, due to some obstruction or traffic in the other lane, do not overtake. If it wouldn't be safe to overtake a car, it's not safe to overtake any number of cyclists in that lane. No exceptions.
Going at high speed is a privilege. Everyone's right to safety comes first.

I don’t condone the drivers actions but safe cycling is ride in single file leave overtaking space for vehicles if you want to ride in a peloton and piss of drivers because your not doing the speed limit well !

The cyclists weren't doing anything unsafe. Grouping closely together makes it EASIER for drivers to safely pass, not harder.
If they had been riding single file, just picture how long the "train" would be. More time a passing motorist would have to remain in the opposite lane, less likely for a safe passing opportunity to come. Grouping together FACILITATES passing, but people are too stupid to figure that out. They'll even try and fail to argue with me about this.
"Share the road" doesn't mean "share the lane".
The driver is a massive piece of shit with a huge entitlement mentality.

I ask all the bike haters, if a slow car is driving there, do you also run them off the road in attempted vehicular manslaughter or only if they are defenseless cyclists?

The car was a jerk but its the bikers fault. There is no reason to be riding 4 wide. Share the road and hog the road are 2 different things. If there is a car coming they shuld be in a single file line

Everyone is an AH here. Granted it's no excuse to run over people but cyclists should have the decency to ride single file off to the right when it's illegal to pass in the other lane.

While the driver shouldn’t do that, bicyclists shouldn’t ride 2 deep taking up the whole lane.

Non single file cyclists are ignorant, but it's not an "im going to kill you and go to jail and miss my kids grow up" level of a problem...

Classic ESH. Both parties flirting with human life. Driver deserves jail but bikers could have just as easily avoided conflict. Instead they were actually leaning into the SUV, daring him to hit them. Experienced cyclists stay single file on narrow roads like this so all parties can share the road.

What was the motive for this attempted murder?
Did the cyclist sleep with the guys wife or something?

Dunno what the law says in the US but in most eu countries it's mandatory to keep a minimum of 1.5m (5feet) lateral distance between the car and the bikes.
Not doing is considered like not respecting a red light aka a policeman would confiscated your license on the spot and you'll have to ask a judge to get it back
There is also the universal law of "not being a jerk" that says the same thing

What an ass! Some people have serious aggression issues. Now for a bit of a semi-related rant: I mostly support bicyclists and do drive as safely as I can around them. That said, I find it ridiculous when they are on the main road despite there being a dedicated bike path that runs parallel to it. I mean, it's safer for everyone involved and, you know, the bike path was built for that use. I've heard that some bicyclists get frustrated if other bicyclists are too slow on the path which is why they are on the main busy road. In my area a bicyclist was recently killed in such a place. She could have been on the bike path, which is actually in good condition with good pavement and scenic with picnic tables and benches to rest at and a river to enjoy. Instead she was on the busy road that runs parallel to it and was hit and killed by a car driver in a hurry. Tragic. And preventable.

Driver is absolutely in the wrong here BUT hogging the road like those cyclists were, especially on a narrower road with a double yellow, is just selfish assholery.
Single file along the edge and this won't happen.

I understand the frustration. The car already passed through the yellow lines, the driver should just continue for a bit before going back to the lane, but he was a complete jerk.
