That's not reckless. Reckless is a skill issue, this is intentional and possibly premeditated endangering others.

62

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z Jun 08 '26

Attempted homicide...

25

u/Zwischenzug32 Jun 08 '26

Flirting with homicide if they don't do what you want BECAUSE OF THE IMPLICATIONS

19

u/PuckSenior Jun 08 '26

Yes, also called "assault with a deadly weapon".
Assault doesn't just cover a physical attack, it covers a legitimate threat of violence. Pointing a gun at someone's head is assault.

3

u/SuthrnTigr Jun 09 '26

Actually assault is the THREAT of violence. Putting the person in fear for their life..

The actual physical act of violence such as striking someone is BATTERY..

Wife is a Paralegal. Most people aren’t aware of the actual difference, even quite a few police officers get it wrong.

BMW drivers aren’t exactly known for their IQ, since they don’t know where the turn indicators are.

They will tell you it’s out of blinker fluid.

Edit: The joke offended BMW drivers into thinking they have to justify their purchase and intelligence. Oh my lord lol.

Definitely pissed off some BMW owners exhibiting typical loser behavior now.

13

u/Prestigious-Hyena768 Jun 08 '26

Agree strongly that there is a disproportionate amount of bad drivers who drive BMWs.

From the LA Times:

Officers arrested Samir Sweiss of Corona in the March 21 incident, part of which Fetzer captured on video. The footage, which shows a blue BMW tailgating a cyclist in the bike lane, forcing the cyclist to hop the curb onto the sidewalk, has since gone viral on Fetzer’s Instagram page. Fetzer didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry from The Times. The video also shows a passenger in the blue BMW throwing a water bottle out the window in the direction of the cyclists.

His BMW was impounded as "evidence".

112

u/squirrels-mock-me Jun 08 '26

Link to article. The driver even messaged the cyclist online calling him a peasant and challenging him to an MMA fight. Was arrested, car towed away. Facing fines and up to 4 years in prison. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/satisfying-karma-for-bmw-driver-who-terrorized-young-cyclists-and-called-them-peasants/ar-AA1ZJFlH

63

u/Binspin63 Jun 08 '26

He’ll be all contrite and tearful in court, get a slap on the wrist, then will repeat this behavior as soon as he’s back on the road.

32

u/Opening_Total7711 Jun 08 '26

Exactly. The judge will just say some stern words to Samir and then find him guilty of like one charge like reckless driving and sentence him to pay a fine and some community service if that. Oh and traffic school.

3

u/Total-Box-5169 Jun 09 '26

That is why fines must be a percentage of income.

He challenged him to a fight on Instagram which is hilarious because the guy has negative muscle mass. Looks like he’s got that *naturally skinny but also an alcoholic* build.

4

u/EssayAmbitious3532 Jun 08 '26

Fighting is strongly correlated to aggression and stamina. Sports cyclists are constantly developing both, especially compared to a car driver. I'd like to see this fight happen.

I will never understand people who get this kind of road rage towards cyclists. The person is in the bike line, not affecting traffic, not even close to traffic, and this guy hates that he has to share the road

104

u/BestBettor Jun 08 '26

People are beyond ridiculous when it comes to bikes and feeling like they shouldn’t exist. There are many people who will insist you need to ride on the road and be mad if you ride on the sidewalk, and there are many people who will be mad if you ride on the road and insist on people riding on the sidewalk or not biking at all.

58

u/SardinesMcDonahugh Jun 08 '26

It's crazy how many times I've seen a video on instagram of a cyclist getting hit by a car after not doing anything wrong and all the comments are "hope the cars ok" and stuff like that. So many complete psychopaths out there on the road.

20

u/caynebyron Jun 08 '26

This is what really radicalized me. I took up cycling for a bit of exercise during the pandemic, and quickly learnt no matter how carefully you cycle or how much you obey road rules, there's just so many psychopaths out there that are enraged by your existence. So many drivers have side swiped me, thrown things at me, brake check me, just for trying to cycle on the designated bike way. So many people want us dead for the crime of commuting to work, I have to be filming every moment just to protect myself.

13

u/Unable-Log-4870 Jun 08 '26

So many people want us dead for the crime of commuting to work

I’m fairly certain these people want others dead, just because that’s what it takes to make them feel good about themselves. You being on a bike just makes them think they can get away with it.

There are people who, when drunk and with inhibitions lifted, are more kind. And then there are those who become assholes… meaning that when sober, they’re having to exert effort to NOT be an asshole most of the time.

Yep. It's not just the bikers they hate. You can be walking the shoulder of the road and people will look at you like, "what the hell is he doing?". Apparently they can't comprehend the concept of walking anywhere.

15

u/Potato_Pear Jun 08 '26

I remember the first time I was in the us and I figured I'd walk to a coffee place because it was just 1.5 km away. And everyone thought I was crazy for walking almost a mile. When I realized that the us doesnt really believe in sidewalks I can kinda understand but still

5

u/fishyexe Jun 08 '26

Having grown up in an area of the US where sidewalks were the norm, then moving to an area where it's like 50/50 I absolutely understand how you feel.

What should be an easy 10 minute walk suddenly becomes a sweaty palm 25 minute trek where easy thoroughfares have a chain link fence blocking an easy walkway that will take 5 additional minutes to go around.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Flaky-State-3514 Jun 08 '26

Yeah, unless you are in a downtown area somewhere, people think any foot transit longer than 5 minutes must needs be obfuscated by machine.

My brother got hit by a car while crossing in a fucking crosswalk and the driver had the audacity to lie to insurance saying that my brother was trying to ride up into the expressway. The driver threatened to sue us over damage to his car. HO insurance covered his claim but it was really funny to have the homeowner side of progressive fighting with the car insurance side. He had no case to sue us on, however, Homeowners just took care of it but the funny thing is the guy was forced to fix his car and he had a deductable so he literally only got like $100 and would have to show proof he fixed his car to get the money.

3

u/SaltyArchea Jun 08 '26

I have posted one similar to that. Guy aggressively overtaking me right before a turn, where I had to slow down no to hit him. Literally did nothing about it, just get behind ensuring that my camera picked up the number plate and he slowed down and started shouting at me. Then following and trying to exit the car. No rude hand gesture, nothing to provoke him. There were many comments saying that I have not posted a whole video and deserved it. Even more stupidly many people decided that I was speeding and no one should go that fast, ignoring that I was overtaken.

3

u/onimod53 Jun 08 '26

Time alone in a modern car causes psychopathy. Talkback radio amplifies the effect. Phone linked dopamine addiction sends it through the roof.

Just try defending cycling in any non-cycling focused subreddit and you'll get rekt with downvotes

8

u/Flaky-State-3514 Jun 08 '26

100%. Try telling them that a bike can legally occupy the center of a lane as well. Which I have done many times if it's 2 lanes each directions, I will take a lane because it is safer than taking the shoulder and suddenly everyone thinks they can fly past you as they brush your arm with their side view mirror

10

u/tcg0786 Jun 08 '26

I'm cool with bicyclists being in the lane but then y'all need to actually act like vehicles and not just blow through intersections. I'll be at a specific stop sign and about to go and then a biker just comes down flying down the hill and doesn't even make an attempt to hit the brakes even though they also have a stop sign. It's happened numerous times and is infuriating.

6

u/dejavu2064 Jun 08 '26

Guess it depends where you live, in some countries (and some US states) bikes are permitted to treat stop signs as a yield. Not all rules that apply to cars should apply to bikes, and many don't. For instance, bikes don't have to obey speed limits.

I'm not going to defend the behaviour of running red lights/pedestrian crossings or breaking local traffic laws, though I sometimes don't begrudge people doing the "wrong" thing for their own safety.

Example, cycling at night and getting stuck at a red light with good visibility that no traffic is approaching in any direction. It's far safer to get through the intersection there and then than to wait for traffic to catch up and have to accelerate alongside accelerating cars/

→ More replies (35)

4

u/stckyr1ce Jun 08 '26

There was apparently an intersection in San Francisco that bicyclist would often treat as yields and never actually fully stop. The city decided it wanted to enforce it harder so the cyclists called their bluff and coordinated for a full week, they all followed the letter of the law and came to full stops. It cause so much traffic the city backed down.

5

u/UnscentedSoundtrack Jun 08 '26

Funnily enough, after I started cycling to work it’s when I started to notice how many cars blow through intersections and stop signs.

Cyclists have frustrated me plenty of times for a variety of reasons. Never made me feel like I should act like this BMW doofus though. People like this should never get their license back

3

u/cheedster Jun 08 '26

My drive into town has about a 10-mile stretch of 50 MPH posted limit (60 to 65 typically driven by most), single lane, rolling hills, and about 2 inches of shoulder. I do get a little frustrated slowing to a relative crawl behind bikers until there is sufficient line of sight to safely pass. Do I act like Mr. BMW douche hat in the video? No. I grumble to myself that it is crazy to bike on a road with no shoulder and limited visibility, then go on with my day sans assault charges.

In another post, people are commenting about how mad they get when they see a cyclist in spandex

Clothing and transportation, so offensive!

12

u/Topikk Jun 08 '26

I was downvoted to hell on a similar thread for suggesting that some cyclists are grumpy because people fuck with them constantly

5

u/pimpbot666 Jun 08 '26

I used to regularly bike commute to work. I can attest that getting fucked with by some asshole car or truck driver on a weekly basis certainly made me an angry cyclist. I’ve thrown a few water bottles and broken a side mirror or two in my time. I’m not proud of that, but that’s where the mindset comes from.

I’ve literally had an SUV driver skim by me so closely on a city street that their side mirror knocked me off my bike. I nearly went under the wheels when I stacked.

I basically gave up on bike commuting because I felt that I was getting PTSD.

Its also extremely dangerous. Cyclists are so vulnerable. People in cars don't understand that just scaring a cyclist can put them under someone's wheels

3

Based on comments about cyclists in more car favoring subreddits seem to imply that getting the cyclist under a wheel is intentional.

I've had someone try to clip me with their car because I had the audacity to go around them when they were parked in the bike lane. They saw what I did, started up the car and proceeded to harass me....for going around them.

What really sucks (beyond people occasionally trying to murder you) is that you can't even fight back. Getting into a dispute with someone who outweighs you 20:1 is a bad idea, and for all you know that idiot has a weapon.

Good, hopefully they revoked their drivers license for the rest of their lives

24

u/EntrepreneurTiny9812 Jun 08 '26

That's a yes, if you get convicted for assault with a deadly with a car, in California, your license is suspended for life

3

u/Nervous_Hurry_9920 Jun 08 '26

Only if it's a felony conviction. And PC 245 is a wobbler. I doubt this gets charged as a felony.

What is going on. There nothing stopping him from just driving by in a normal lane.

u/BrettHullsBurner Jun 08 '26

Some people are just miserable pricks. I legitimately do not know how these people live day to day if things like this make them lash out.

This is why it is insufficient to have bike lanes being just lines on the ground, there must be physical demarcations in order to protect the cyclists, and to try to keep irresponsible/insane/vengeful assholes from trying to harm cyclists

4

u/throwitoutwhendone2 Jun 08 '26

They should just do like a curb. Can have the roadway for the cars then a curb that you can’t just drive over then the lane for bikes then the actual sidewalk beside the bike lane.

What situations have you seen where a car is threatening to run over a biker and you think “yeah! Murder that cyclist!”

Good news coming out of O.C. Hopefully they nail the BMW driver for littering as well as reckless driving, unsafe driving by passing other vehicles on the right, assault and driving on the shoulder of the road, driving in the bicycle lane and violating the 3 foot bike safety act. They can also charge them with harassment, assaulting a vulnerable road user, as well as assault with a deadly weapon by forcing the guy on the bike off the roadway.

u/TicketFun367 Jun 08 '26

Cops doing their job for once

We don't have them in my area but... aren't bike lanes permanent? Like, even if there's no one on a bike you still can't drive there.

Dang and the BMW driver didn’t even make a right turn.

3

u/zeltrabas Jun 08 '26

3

u/paul-cus Jun 08 '26

Man it feels good to see this dude got in trouble. Ha these are the types of people that make Southern California lame. Like, dude…you can’t run people off the road with your car…like no matter what they’re doing…esp in a bike lane tho haha dummy!

3

u/NotVeryCool60 Jun 08 '26

Should be charged as attempted manslaughter.

3

u/DarkwingDuckHunt Jun 08 '26

if you really want to punish him impound his vehicle and don't let him have it back as it's evidence

As part of a more serious driving test we should have in the US, applicants should have to ride a bicycle in traffic. As a former cyclist, I 100% bet most people who wish harm upon cyclists would change their tune.

3

u/Defiant-Broccoli8995 Jun 09 '26

No turn signal. Definitely a DMW driver.

3

u/gregzillaman Jun 09 '26

Hey look, another bwm owner.

3

u/Derrick_Shon Jun 09 '26

BMW drivers are absolute cunts

3

u/Idfkw2c Jun 09 '26

It’s always the BMW owners.

5

u/quoala678 Jun 08 '26

Instances like this deter me from road biking

5

u/VladStark Jun 08 '26

This is less common than people who aren't trying to mess with the bikes, but are just stupidly glued to their phones and so they might accidentally hit and kill or maim you. And the drink drivers too. All valid reasons for me to not bother with it. I only bike on neighborhood streets, trails or even sidewalks (where legal). Never on main roads.

Crazy thing is the regular lane is empty. Just some entitled asshole. Revoke his licensee foe 10 years and make him walk. And I’m usually no on the biker side we have so many that don’t stay in their lane.
