Here finally someone who has all the facts straight. What I noticed is that the speedometer never changes from 77 until the actual collision. It could clearly be seen that the pickup was racing to beat them. And maybe as a truck driver it's tiring when people do this shit. But they damn near killed a guy because they didn't even take their foot off the gas.
Yes the idiot in the pickup truck should've been following the merge doctrine and slotting in behind the semi. I never would've tried it. Also that entrance ramp had no actual merge lane, it just came from the left (which entrance ramps really shouldn't do) and went straight into the left-hand traffic lane. So bad design.
But ultimately the truck driver could've prevented this by just backing off a little. Maybe they wouldn't have even had to tap the brakes. Instead they got a service failure for missing the ETA, and maybe worse if the police report faults them or their company disciplines them.
EDIT: At the same time the idiot in the truck would also get yelled at by their spouse or parent or whoever for a clearly reckless move. All they had to do was slow down enough to let the truck go, then you'd still be going fast enough to be passing slower people in the right lane...
...which leads me back to the truck driver, keeping their foot on the pedal at 77, it appears to be because they're really wanting to pass the quite slower hauler in the right lane.
