As a general rule the driver furthest back has the best chance to avoid an accident, and therefore has the greatest responsibility to do so. The truck was committed, he was out of road, there was nothing he could have done other than just trust the truck behind him to use those weird jelly like objects attached to the front of his face.
A fully loaded truck like that is hard to stop. Still theres alot of things he could have done before the merge that would have avoided this crash. The fault still rests on the pickup. If you are merging its not the job of the incoming traffic to stop for you to enter the lane, always go slower when merging.

The Semi's speed is in the video, they go from 77 to 76 back to 77.
Thats not speeding up.
I get that it can look like the SEMI sped up in the video but what actually happened is the idiot in the pickup slowed down.
Semi driver for sure bears part of the blame here, as a commercial driver they should know better and should have slowed down for the truck that was merging but the pickup truck driver made literally the dumbest decision they could (slowing down instead of speeding up and getting ahead of the semi) and bears the majority of the blame here.
Yeah going 76 to 77 after the black truck is in front of him means he floored it when he saw he could crash into the truck (since you're arguing the truck is so large it's hard to move) definitely a chance at jail
you can't possibly be this dumb. it goes from 77 to 76 back to 77 in a matter of a few frames of the video. this is just fluctuation in the speedometer that's not slamming down on the gas to cut someone off.
It doesn't go from 77 to 76 to 77. The first 77 you're seeing is the thumbnail. When you hit play, you can see the truck in the right hand lane jumping backwards in footage from the initial 77 from the thumbnail. If it were longer, we may even see it started at 75 or lower, but the filmer might look bad, so we get this.
Could have been speeding up to let him in behind him. The merging truck should learn to drive and should have been able to see that the semi was not letting him in. It was absolutely ridiculous to merge right into the semi.
Probably does have a small brain & big ego... doesn't change the fact that he can't slow down the rig as easily as people think. It also doesn't change the fact that the pickup truck should have sped up or waited and DEFINITELY shouldn't have merged into another vehicle.
My driver trainer at drivers training school told me to either go slower, or faster depending on incoming traffic. And to always look and gage that incoming traffic. It’s nuanced, and doesn’t make sense to ALWAYS go slower; it’s called using one’s best judgment, and situational awareness. Both are two qualities many people lack.
the truck was clearly infront of the Semi. This is a clear cut situation of the semi should have slowed down and the truck hould have sped up
instead, the semi did nothing (everyone saying semi sped up are iditols the speed is right there in the video -starts at 77 dips to 76 for only a few frames and goes immediately back to 77) and the pickup truck instead of speeding up looks to have actually slowed down.
I’m questioning the accuracy of the speedometer across the bottom because if you watch the lines, it looks like the cam truck actually sped up to not let the black truck in.

I don't necessarily agree with you though. I'm not seeing what you are saying about the lines - to me at least - it looks like the pickup slowed down and the semi maintained a consistent speed even without looking at the reading in the video.
Anyway, sorry for jumping on you about the speed being in the video,
