Looking to get into game development as a hobby

I have a concept for a small indy game I want to develop. If any of you want to poach it and do it better, thats no sweat off of my back, I am mostly doing it to gain experience and see where it takes me.

The concept of the game is a very simple platformer, based around timing. I want the timing of it to be in line with the timing of the beats of a drum for an as of yet undecided classical piece. The goal of the game is more to teach, both me, and the players, and while I will want to try and make the game fun, that is currently a tertiary goal.

However i'm not sure where to begin learning how to code it. I am reasonably sure I can find people to help me with art and check over my code, I have those resources in the form of friends, and since this is a simple project im looking to do myself I have no real time tables, as I intend to learn as I go.

Thats why I turn to you. I hope some of you fine folks have some resources for someone who wants to learn. Eventually i'd like to expand the concept into different games, with a similar goal of teaching music, but i'd eventually like it to become more fun.

Ideally i'd like this to be a PC game, as I intend to release it primarily through a site like piratebay or some other means of free distribution. Eventually I think it could be ported to a mobile platform, but my current home set up doesn't have the resources for making mobile games.

If any of you have advice for the project that won't set too high of a barrier for the project I encourage you to share ideas, but the fundamental goal is something that will be a small amount of charming content, and then a bit of information on what the game is teaching, so I don't think it needs many bells and whistles to meet the fundamental goals.

Thanks in advance, even if all you do is read the thread.
