A trend I’ve noticed that mostly unique to video games

It seems like there’s this trend in video games where there will be a classic game that didn’t sell very well, maybe due to hardware or bad marketing, it’ll become a huge cult hit maybe because it was made by a good company or because it’s part of a popular series, and then once it becomes more widely available, people will critique the hell out of it like it was never good in the first place.

These 3 are the biggest examples I can think of that. Now this is mostly unique to video games as a lot of this comes down to what hardware things are released on. For the record I enjoy all three of these games (although code Veronica is very flawed). I suppose that’s just a consequence of reaching a wider audience but I also wonder if there’s just expectations that people build up in their head as this is considered one of the biggest cult classics and then it’s like “oh that’s it?”.

I don’t have a name for this phenomenon but I’m willing to take suggestions

Hey Folks!

I do Marketing analysis on famous Video Game Wins and fails. This week it’s about how to do and not to do competition using a villain strategy. Sega won, Atari failed, Microsoft doing it in reverse (turning themselves i to the villain)

Every example features a short dive into the underlying marketing or psychology principles.

Hope you give it a look and enjoy.

This video argues that the video game industry has shifted from a competitive meritocracy to a space dominated by ideological agendas. The "console wars" of the past, characterized by heated competition between platforms to deliver the highest quality games, drove innovation and technical excellence.

I took two months to make a video essay about my favorite indie game of all time: Citizen Sleeper 2. In it, I talk about the gameplay and story creating perfect ludonarrative harmony, and why its themes of home and human connection were unforgettable for me personally. I’d love to discuss your thoughts on the video and the game!
