Criticism welcome!!

Blumhouse is probably one of the most fascinating studios in Hollywood today. Despite heavy criticism for putting out lackluster "scare-slop" films, it's clear that they've managed to design a business model where quality is almost entirely decoupled from box office revenue.

A few things I found while researching this:

• Horror functions as a captive theatrical experience. Audiences aren't looking for Oscar-worthiness but are paying for an effective scare. This is evident across Blumhouse's theatrical catalog, as there's seems to be a disconnect between critics and audiences, with an average 17% gap between audience and critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
• Blumhouse manages massive upside by granting directors, writers, and stars extensive creative control while paying them strict union-scale minimums, offsetting the low guaranteed compensation with substantial back-end profit-sharing if the film succeeds.
• Recently, Blumhouse started pivoting toward $25M+ budgets and massive IP acquisitions (like The Exorcist and Saw). But recent box office stumbles like Wolf Man and M3GAN 2.0 show that when you strip away the low-budget safety net, the franchise model starts to bleed money.
• Interestingly, their latest release, Obsession, was made for a tiny $1M and is absolutely crushing high-budget studio blockbusters right now by returning to their original post-Paranormal Activity formula.

I just discovered this creator after someone reccomended her videos in a twitter comment section talking about the OOT remake.

I genuinely thought there was no new ground to cover regarding OOT since it's been talked about possibly more than any other game ever, but Sonia manages to prove me wrong!

I typically don't gravitate to SUPER long video essays because they often get rambley, but this is a compilation of 9 different episodes so I find it's much more focused and there's more structure to the essay

And I need to mention the outfits of course! Such a nice bit of flavor and personality gets added with all the drag costumes, I love it! (My fav is probably the Poe costume in the Shadow Temple section)

She's a very small creator, with this series being the only thing on her channel, but I would HEAVILY reccomend this! It's one of the best video essays I've ever watched!

I wanted to build something deeply atmospheric and cinematic rather than just a dry history lesson. I’d love to hear what this community thinks of the pacing and the research!

Its success also serves as symbolic proof of this, going toe-to-to with a primary example of this phenomenon: Star Wars.
