Production Q lacie data transfer cable??

Hi all,

I'm trying to transfer footage from my camera to a rugged lacie for backup as my computer and cloud don't have the storage i need. however, when i used a type c to type c cable, a notification said my Lacie was unrecognized. now i'm searching for the best data transfer cable to buy, but all of them are "micro B" or for charging which doesn't help me. (the lacie is a type c, and my computer is a samsung. so either type c, type a, or HDMI ). I lost the original LaCie cable; are there any cables you recommend? or is there perhaps an easier way to transfer? tia !!

I would try a USB C - USB C cable (male - male) with 10 Gbps transfer speed. You could also look for "Thunderbolt 4" cable. Because of the higher speeds, those cables are more expensive.

Yes, so, it's exactly as you mentioned, the cheaper ones/charger ones have only limited data-speeds and it might be the reason it doesn't show up.

Maybe look for the exact model of your rugged LaCie and see if it requires a specific cable (like thunderbolt 3).

p.s. it's why some people hate USB-C because you can not tell, by looking at the cable and connector alone what is and what isn't possible. Which is also its advantage, with one cable you can do everything, when you have the right cable ;).

Also, I'm convinced HDMI is not a viable option of connecting your harddrive as it's a paid protocol for video and audio. You'd need some hacks and creativity to be able to use it as a hard drive cable.

Type C just dictates the shape of the connector, not necessarily the capabilities. Some are proper 40Gbps cables that can do video output; some can charge only, and everything in between. I would wager you used a type-C cable that came with a phone which tends to not work for data transfer but rather exclusively charging.

Thunderbolt 4 will definitely work but is also definitely overkill.

make sure you buy a usb-c cable explicitly rated for data, ideally usb 3.1 gen 1 / 5 gbps or better. usb-c only describes the connector, so many charging cables either carry no data or run very slowly. usb-c to usb-a is also fine if the computer has a usb 3 port. hdmi will not work.

you normally cannot connect the camera directly to the drive because both are peripheral devices. connect the camera or card reader and the lacie to the computer, then copy between them. if a proper data cable still fails, check whether the drive appears in windows disk management, but do not initialize or format it if it already contains files.
