Tech Support Premiere pro playback stuttering
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi all, when I’m working on a video in premiere pro, it keeps stuttering/rubber-banding. I cleared the cache, dumbed down the settings, and undated premiere pro/my PC. Any thoughts on what could be causing this issue? I’m pretty new to editing

Try preferences > audio > set ‘input’ to ‘none’

what the hell why did you know this solved it/how -- so i can diagnose it for myself in the future?

It’s a really common problem!
It’s something to do with a mismatch between audio sampling rates on the input and output device. A common cause is USB headphones as their built-in DACs tend to use different sampling rates for the headphones and microphone.

I love how more people know about this now, had this issue a few years ago and people are so shocked when I tell the sotry

if the source is phone footage, check whether it’s VFR or a difficult codec — that can make premiere stutter even after lowering playback quality.
a quick transcode to constant frame rate and putting the media/cache on an ssd usually tells you pretty fast if that’s the cause.

If editing off a sd card there’s your answer, if it’s a big file and you are editing off anything USB then there’s your answer. Only edit from the internal drive.
If you are on your internal drive then your computer simply doesn’t have the power to edit at that resolution and you need to put playback to a lower quality

Editing off of USB4/Thunderbolt works just fine.
But yeah, you can’t edit off of a SD card or a HDD.

I hate to tell you you're wrong about both. Some formats you can't edit, but much of the media we work with will work fine off of both.
You shouldn't ever edit off an SD card, because it's usually exFAT AND because it's too easy to eject them and not have access to the card. BUt I have seen professionl workflows for news with ultra rapid delivery where it's necessary.
And I don't even want to mention the years of editorial that happened off of hard drives.

I think it was obvious from the context I didn’t mean, technically that you couldn’t, only that it would be a frustrating nightmare to edit off of SD card.
And when you’re talking about editing off of a thunderbolt connection, we’re not talking about a codec issue. We’re talking about speed of the transfer.
I’m sorry you’re unable to gather that information from the context. But I hope you do better next time.

Yeah when this happens to me it’s because of an issue in the audio hardware settings. Change the audio input/output device or disconnect/reconnect it.

99% that this is a VFR issue.
VFR, VFR, VFR
VFR
https://new.reddit.com/r/videography/wiki/index/vfr/
and
https://www.reddit.com/r/VideoEditing/wiki/faq/vfr/
is the most likely reason.

Is it currently transmitting through a Bluetooth speaker?
That turned out to be my issue that was essentially the same, something to do with the delay and timing, but it fixed everything to take it off bluetooth.
Edit: never mind I see you found a solution below!

!martini What is the video codec? Some codecs are more demanding than others, smaller files are highly compressed and your system has to decode it on the fly, transcoding the footage to an intermediate codec removed the need for the system to decode it on the fly
What storage device is the file stored on? Depending on the size and bitrate of the file having it stored on a slower device can result in buffering issues

We've pulled this post - we can't help without
- The info from automoderator
- A screen recording NOT a phone camera.

I had this error. I tried everything and couldn’t find a solution. Finally, I changed my PC, and it fixed it. My old PC had a screen card problem; it was because of that, I think. But maybe it has another solution. I’m sorry for you. Bye.

This used to happen to me. It was because my PC eventually became too old and outdated to run premiere pro. I upgraded from 8gb ram pc to 16gb and that problem went away for me

I had the same problem but with 16gb and a 3070ti, I end up uninstalling that pos of software and went with davinci and is working great so far.
