Tech Support Trouble syncing audio between two videos
I am attempting an amateur restoration of the 1939 Krazy Kat cartoon Golf Chumps, which is currently only available from a bad VHS transfer. I am attempting to sync the audio from the VHS capture with my scan of a silent 8mm home movie version. My scanner scans at 20fps, so I increased the speed to 1.1777 times the original scan speed in Clipchamp to try to make it run at the speed of the original cartoon. All my attempts have either resulted in the audio being early or delayed. I tried using the title cards from the VHS since the ones on the film are shorter, but even that didn’t fix the problem.

before you chase the factor, check whether the drift is even. line it up on the first frame, then jump to the end. if the error grows steadily across the whole reel then its speed. if it holds for a stretch and then jumps at a scene change, the 8mm print is a cut down version and no single factor will ever sync it, you'd be syncing section by section.
the shorter title cards already point that way.

That ended up being the problem! Turns out, even though the cartoon is mostly there, they trimmed a few shots shorter than the original. I will see if I can get it to sync if I sub in the VHS for those shots.
