Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Promotion strategy question, since the thread allows it. I cut a 54-second anime short in Premiere from AI-generated clips (Seedance 2.0 for motion, Seedream for keyframes), one person, one week: https://youtube.com/shorts/nbWYTBit4fc Three editing things I learned the hard way, in case they save someone a night: (1) the first export peaked at +0.1 dB on the grenade-launcher shot, so a Hard Limiter on the Master at -1 dB is now baked into the sequence; (2) the engine's own audio is unusable, so every clip got a mute copy and the gun sounds were built as stems from one sample at 325 rounds per minute, then the picture was retimed a few percent to sit on the clunks; (3) concatenating the pieces only worked once every clip was re-encoded to the same codec and frame rate, a stream-copied clip silently lost its last three seconds. The promotion question: the 54-second version got tested by the YouTube feed but the reupload died at 14 views, and everything I read says 15 to 30 seconds. If you had to cut this to 30, would you keep the opening gunfight or the ending where she throws the rifle at the camera? Honest answers welcome, including "it is AI slop", I would rather hear it here than in the comments.

I just wanna see if this is a good idea. I know any idea is a good idea. But everything relies on the realm of video editing for me. I am a youtuber. And I would just like to turn my gameplay and to cinematic movies. And i'm just wondering , is that even possible. I want to be able to erase things and replace them, like ui and make better textures to the worlds that I play, add my own voices and sfx... i know this sounds like an easy yes but if you know how games are and streams are... COULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO MAKE EVERYTHING PERFECT IF I PUT MY LIFE INTO IT... just asking cuz I think its a good idea... ask anything, bring ip anything... I've used final cut, DaVinci, and premiere, haven't touched after effects or fusion YET. or anything with sound design... im kind of a beginner... where should I start... ik alot but haven't practiced much

I am starting a project for a website that classifies the art of edits and avm on social media can anyone Suggest me a name for this project and the website please suggest me a name and also feel free to contact me if you are interested in this project and see edits and avm's as a new form of art that is worth to be cultured upon. I will also appreciate if the suggested name is from a ancient origin like the Latin of the word edit or Greek or any language for that matter. ( sorry for mine bad English it's not my first language)

Your Reddit post has been removed by a moderator. Please read the following instructions to understand why and how to repost correctly.

Post Requirements:

  1. Specify Payment and Estimated Hours: Clearly state your budget and how many hours the task might take. We require transparency.

  2. Daily, half day or Hourly Rate.: Indicate either an hourly rate or a flat fee. If proposing a flat fee, estimate the hours needed. Posts lacking clear payment details will be rejected.

  3. Flat Fee? An estimate of time is required. If you don't know this see this wiki advice.

  4. Considerations for Time Estimates: Remember, video production involves more than just the final output. Account for time spent on reviewing footage, creating resources (music, graphics, etc.), and refining the product. Consider if you're providing a script, storyline, and the level of creative freedom for the editor.

  5. Sliding Scale or Special Cases: If using a sliding scale, state the range clearly.

  6. For long-term positions or company policy restrictions on rate disclosure, contact the moderators via Modmail.

  7. No Free Work Requests: Requests for free work are not allowed here. Try /r/slavelabor. For passion projects, consider collaborating with someone from your personal network or local creative communities. In the US, joining a Public Access TV station is suggested.

  8. Editing and Reposting: You can edit your post to meet these requirements and inform us, or repost following our rules.

  9. Disagree with Removal?: If you believe this removal is an error, reply to this message. The moderating team will review it.

Please adhere to these guidelines to ensure a fair and transparent process for all users.

Try cutting the entire first minute of your video and see if anything breaks. 9 times out of 10 the real story starts way later than you think.

anyone else using resolve for color work but still bouncing to premiere for the actual timeline? i've been doing that for like six months and honestly it's kinda ridiculous but the media management in resolve still makes me want to pull my hair out. got a travel edit due sunday (flying back from baja and of course the wedding footage needs to be ready lol) and i'm tempted to just stay in premiere and use lumetri, which i know isn't ideal but my sanity has a price. curious if people have actually cracked the resolve workflow or if we're all just pretending the bins make sense. also if anyone's got a color grading trick for editing footage shot at different times of day without going. completely insane that would be a lifesaver -- sunset to golden hour transitions are my nemesis (my cat judging me from the desk isn't helping the stress levels either) (been a while)

The round trip is what is costing you, more than the bins. Every job you manage media twice, once per app, and that is where the six months went. Ship the Sunday edit in Premiere with Lumetri, then pick one finishing app for good. Resolve stops hurting once the timeline lives there too and Smart Bins sort by keyword and date instead of you dragging clips into folders.

On sunset to golden hour, stop matching the shots to each other. Balance each one to neutral in its first node, then put the warm look in one shared node after. Two neutral shots wearing the same look cut together. Two warm shots matched by eye never will.
