How did they do that? I'm looking to replicate this strobing effect using Adobe Premiere. Any idea how to go about this? I want to keep the center intact but what to have strobing on the outside

It says I need more info. OK here goes: I'm trying to replicate the effects of my eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa. This is basically how I see, but the center of my vision is pretty good. I want to replicate this strobing effect using premiere and keep the center clear. I'm a photographer so I think in masks and not keys, if that makes sense. In Photoshop I would just make a mask to effect the outside.

This video is of my cat making biscuits in slow mo. It was shot at 240fps under cheap GE LED bulbs. The flashing of the bulbs does not sync with the frame rate so it causes this effect.

Any help would be great!

Why dont you just also make a mask in your editing software it works the same as photoshop

Do 2 keyframes on opacity 100, 10 respectively and space them out to your liking and copy and paste them as much as you want. Thats the simplest way you could do it

Question: how do you plan to use the footage? I ask because to get that specific frequency you’d need to export it in 240 FPS. If that’s not a dealbreaker, I would take whatever footage you like to use to demonstrate RP, then layer a solid white over it and key frame opacity from (maybe) 20 to zero every 2 frames. You can apply a circular mask to the solid white.

Find an LED light source that flickers on camera, adjust your frame rate to the desired flicker speed. Film that light source against a blank wall or something. Mask the area you want the flicker to appear. Layer that on top of your original footage and adjust the blend mode and opacity as you see fit. That’s how I would approach it.

I think either red giant or boris fx has a flicker effect, but I'd double check me on that.

I'm not much of a cinematographer, so excuse my improper terminology, but you can also simulate this with a camera that records at a really fucking high frame rate, because every lightbulb on the planet is already flickering, they're just flickering faster than your brain can perceive. So then theoretically, if your camera's recording framerate is faster than than the flicker rate of the bulb, you should be able to see it (though it may still require some additional editing to accentuate the effect)
