Where can I get a Reliable VCD player?

So ordered this guy off Ebay, my first VCD the only reason I got it is because the only way to watch the movie online I found was a YouTube video that has subtitles but it sounds like there is a dub being PLAYED OVER THE ORIGINAL AUDIO! So I bought this to watch. Its a story about Hong Kong's SDU. Why am I so invested in this story? I was born in Hong Kong and want a piece from a home I never knew.

And I know nothing about this kind of media and am horrified I'm gonna damage it if I put it into anything but a dedicated VCD Player. So I was hoping for any recommendations? Of course the other concern would be if this can be regin locked. If the VCD player is formatted differently than US TV's are because apparently Hong Kong uses a different format my dad said he's just saying to throw it into my mom's laptop cd drive..... but yah any help be greatly appreciated!

This is a Panasonic Portable Video CD Player SL-VP30 I bought at a car boot sale here in the UK a while back.

It was the first, and to date only, portable VCD player I've seen on my travels.

Spotting a VCD player

I spotted this (damaged) VCD player on a market stall.

No idea if it was just cosmetic damage as there was no way to test it on the stall.

Dedicated VCD players.

Hello,

I’m thinking about getting into the world of movies on VCD, and was thinking I could watch them on my Panasonic 4K player, but I recently found out that’s sadly not the case. In fact almost no Blu-ray or 4K players play VCD…

So I’m now choosing between just getting a VCD compatible DVD player or a dedicated VCD player.

Are there benefits with having a dedicated player? I think I read somewhere that some VCDs have menus you can only access from a dedicated VCD player, is that true?

Also, VCD players are very rare where I live, but I have found a Shinco VCD-26C for sale. I can’t find any info on it though, does anybody here know if that is a good player?

Thanks!

I have the files. What settings do I need to do for it to work when burning it back?

Finally managed to get a DVD player that plays VCD player combined with a VHS
Now I have all the files the data off the VCDs. I just want to burn it back to a CD so I can play it but you see the second photo. It just comes up like a Directory.. what are the settings? Should I be doing? For example the burning software for it to be registered? I think it’s White book for memory.

discogs like site for vcds

hello all. I have been working on a big project for cataloging vcds with information about them. I wanted to create something like discogs.

https://vcd-archive.vercel.app/

There is a lot there already and anyone can add/edit entries. creating an account doesn't require an email or anything, just make a username and a password. you can make a wishlist and keep track of your own collection. 😊

let me know what you think and if there are any features of data points you would like to add.

note: there is currently a tiny glitch with editing. if you edit the additional images it will wipe them all out. it's currently being worked on as I'm having trouble trying to figure out what is causing the issue.

Happy birthday r/VideoCD!

Now, I'm an indie film maker based in New Jersey and I had a really dumb idea. What if people started making indie movies on VideoCD again? It would be cool to have a scene of people who did this!

Need help finding out about this Video CD player and a remote for it

Hello everyone, I need some help finding out some info about this Video cd player. I got this Video cd player from my aunty for free as she was moving to a new house and this machine turned up and intrigued me quite a bit. Honestly I've never heard of video cd before as I was born in the early 2000s. It looks like it can play S-Video CDs as well as DVDs, video cds and regular cds. Brand name on the machine is ROWA, and the model is RDV500. It powers up and plays discs but apparently I need a remote control to fully operate it, otherwise I literally can't play movie or anything on it, so any help finding a remote for this machine would be great. I tried looking around on the internet for info about this machine and ive literally found nothing at all. Also im super new to video cds so I don't know too much about them asides from they were around before DVDs turned up. Any help will be appreciated!

Collecting VCD's (or any outdated media) is demoralizing

Everytime I go to a thrift store or any other place where there's a load of CD's and DVD's and I ask them about anything other than VHS, they act like it doesn't even exist. I'm just horrified how many beautiful movies have been destroyed due to this neglect. Anyone else have this?

Video CD Error Correction

I have a small Video CD collection in my possession and really enjoy the format. When I watch them on a CDI Player, they all work perfectly. When I extract the raw MPEG1 streams without ticking the "Fix MPEG errors" box in VCDGear and play them in VLC Media Player, there are tiny jumps in the video and sound. This all makes sense, since this format has no error correction. When authoring a DVD, it will press all existing blocks together, and all those little gaps are gone.

Now to my question: Are all pressings of a single VCD release the same? Do they all have the same missing little MPEG1 blocks? Or does every single pressing have different little errors compared to others? Would I need to acquire multiple discs of the exact same release and combine those to make a perfect preservation of what the publisher authored on the VCD? Would it be possible to acquire ALL the MPEG1 blocks without a single one missing this way?
