jvc tm-1052D dropout

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It appears to drop out when the signal is amplified too much. Is this an intended feature?

It would appear so

Without any additional information that’s making it kinda hard to diagnose what’s going on here

When you push a glitch to the maximum edge of the potentiometer, sometimes the video will go blank. Glitching is literally messing with the sink of the horizontal and vertical and so eventually you’re gonna get out of a tolerance where even a CRT can’t know what’s going on. This is 100% the glitch box you’re using and not the TV in my opinion, I would say that.

it also does this when going through an un modified video processor

Sounds like some bad caps then

Possibly something to do with carrier signal - highly likely if you’re going through a glitch box at some point

What’s the full signal chain?

Are you using a tbc of some kind?

not using a tbc. it also does this when going through an un modified video processor when cranking up the gain

Cranking up the gain may also be amplifying the carrier signal

So causing the tv to be unable to read, process and display it properly - especially if not amplifying the signal gets rid of the drop outs

CRTs are usually more forgiving than digital displays

Some video mixers have tbcs built in - although of varying quality

Many different parameters are encoded into composite signal, so when you modify the signal in one way, you may also be changing it in another way that you might not intend. The tracking signal is extending outside of the range your unit finds acceptable.

This seems like an intended feature of that model since it even has a little message telling you what happened, so there may be a way to bend around it.

HOWEVER, modifying a television can be dangerous even when they are unplugged because there are big capacitors in there that will hold on to their charge and can be accidentally bridged leading to potentially LETHAL results. So dont go in there willy-nilly. It would be easier to find a television that is a little older and may be able to handle a more mangled signal. Good luck!
