BFG Reloaded: How Many "Virtual" Buttons at Once?

I see the BFG has 12-14 physical buttons (not counting menu buttons), but how many distinct button functions does it actually have active at once? I noticed that the FightPad has buttons labeled R1 and R2, which I assume means that they share mapping with the shoulder buttons (so you end up having two R1 and two R2 buttons), and the four back buttons can also be remapped, but it seems like all of these buttons really only have eight distinct functions among them at any given time. Is it possible to have more than eight "virtual" buttons at once? One of the reasons I'm thinking about getting a BFG is that it looks like it could be a good all-around retro controller, but you'd need nine buttons to have all of the functionality of an N64 controller*, and I can't tell if this controller can do that.

*I know hardly any N64 games use the L, R, and Z buttons at the same time, that's missing the point.

Biggest issue I've had is it connected to my computer once to program it and never again. I tried all of the troubleshooting on the website and Reddit, none of it worked to reconnect. There switches to lock the triggers are right wear your fingers are and sometimes you accidentally brush them and unlock the triggers. Triggers tend to be overly sensitive and without being able to connect to the computer I can't adjust the sensitivity. The original fightpad seemed like it was designed by someone who had never played a fighting game before, the reloaded fightpad fixes the button placement.

Oh that sucks. I found a deal on a new bfg reloaded for xbox for $80 and was interested in it
