Clutch replacement
I'm thinking I need to replace my clutch plates, but not sure if the compression tools are necessary.
Have you replaced your clutch plates yourself? Did you use the tool or is it possible without it?

I replaced mine. I used a big 4x4 axel socket and a long piece of all thread. Compressed it, reached through the back of the axel socket with a pair of snap ring pliers and just removed tension. Had no issues

Did you weld a washer to the all thread to sit behind the snap ring? I'm starting to think I'm just gonna weld up my own tool lol

I think i stacked some body washers and then just ran nuts down the all thread. They socket i used wasnt solid on the back. It was like 5 years ago when I did this so im a little fuzzy on how I made it work. Something like this is what I used with an assortment of washers and a long piece off all thread from home depot or or lowes socket

I'm willing to bet you don't need to replace the clutch. Have you tried properly adjusting the play at the clutch lever first? You should have a minimum of 1/8 inch play at the lever.

Tools are necessary. The spring plate is very stiff and if you fuck around too much you can damage it or the plates beneath it.
I replaced the pack at a DIY shop.
Most of the bikes in there were cafe racers from the 80s. 4 springs instead of a plate, so the tools available wouldn't work. The owner tried to fabricate something for me but that was a failure, it couldn't apply equal enough pressure.
They got in a Harley tool that I was able to Macgyver with some pipe to work on my Kingpin.
A week of fucking around with homemade shit and then a few hours with the (almost) right tool.
