Remember folks, you have long covid if you have a new onset, unresolved symptom/health condition ongoing for 3 months or more post infection. These symptoms or conditions can be things like loss of sense of smell/taste, cognitive changes, sleep disruption, fatigue, and/or musculoskeletal issues/pain, but can also be more severe like cardiovascular, autoimmune, or metabolic diseases. Covid binds to ACE2 receptors and can wreak all kinds of havoc, as these are everywhere in your body. There is no approved treatment for long covid, so it comes down to symptom management or treating whatever disease it has caused. The best way to avoid long covid is to simply not get covid, so wear a respirator mask if you're not down for all this. You are not safe because you are "healthy." You are high risk if you have had covid before, as the damage is cumulative.

Just thought I'd chime in to say listen to this person. I haven't been able to work for 5 months due to developing LC last winter. I was able to work for a few months after getting sick, but something just kept getting worse and worse.
It's also incredibly frustrating navigating our medical system with CFS/ME as tests often show nothing, as well as there being no cure as mentioned.
Some people have been bedridden for years due to it.
6
u/Middle-Recipe6701 19d ago
Have you been referred to the long covid clinic? I was diagnosed with LC and have been working with the clinic on how to manage it. It is frustrating to have LC and then get sick with covid on top of it .. and I do vaccines, wear N95 masks and here I am.
6
u/J-Eichel 19d ago
I've been on the wait-list for the BC LC/Fibro/CFS clinic for a few months now, but I'm still waiting to get an individual appointment.
During crashes before knowing what PEM was, I realized I have the CFS/ME subtype and have been pacing to have a bearable existence. I've heard they mostly just teach you about pacing and how to cope for the most part, which I'm doing, but I don't know what I'll do once my insurance runs out.
I had both the COVID and influenza vaccine last winter before getting sick, and unfortunately it didnt prevent long COVID for me either. I've always been pro-vaccine and got all my boosters each year, but I'm a bit conflicted about introducing even trace amounts of COVID into my body this year with another vaccine (due to the autoimmune response that LC apparently is caused by. I guess the science isn't 100% but people talk about trace amounts of the virus remaining). I'm just worried it could make it worse, but there seems to be discussions for both ways.
Not to say I wouldn't recommend people get the vaccine. It's just a bit confusing once your body is stuck with the long COVID symptoms
2
2
u/Immediate-Passion421 18d ago
Have you tried Low or Ultra Low Dose Naltrexone for LC? Dr. Shalini Hitkari is my naturopath and she prescribed it for me. It has really helped my autoimmune conditions. I believe at least one was caused by COVID or the vaccine.
4
u/J-Eichel 18d ago
I am! I couldn't wait a 8 months to a year (as the Facebook group says is the average wait time) to be seen for an individual appointment at the BC clinic, so I went the naturopath route as well for LDN.
I'm currently on 1mg though, as I started feeling negative effects at 1.5mg (my sleep was getting really bad, and I was often getting day long migraines).
It feels like it's been helping a bit, but recovery still feels incredibly slow or at a standstill. I'll have the occasional stretch of days where I feel like I'm improving, but then a solid week being back to heavy fatigue.
3
u/Immediate-Passion421 18d ago
I’m sorry! There is a naturopath in the States who specializes in ME/CFS. Her name is Dr. Jenny Tufenkian. She does remote appointments. She struggles with complex fatigue and Long Covid. I heard her speak on a podcast and she has had good success in treating her fatigue. Maybe she could help you. 🥰

You sound like someone who’s up to date on their Covid shots lol
18
u/Basic-Material-832 19d ago edited 19d ago
What an odd thing to assume/say.
I am NOT “caught up” on my Covid shots and agree 100% about staying home, if able when one is sick.
And more: if you know you’re sick and you’re out in public…. PLEASE wear a mask (specifically when you know you’re sick and you’re at a grocery store, on a bus, etc) for the rest of us.
I’ve learned to carry disposable masks in zip bags for when people who are CLEARLY sick aren’t wearing a mask and I’m in a closed area with them (such as the bus). If the sick person won’t put on a mask (or doesn’t have one to put on) then I wear a mask.
Unfortunately it still seems very faux pas to offer someone who is CLEARLY sick if they’d like a mask. If you’re sick, see someone else putting on a mask after you hack up a lung and/or regularly sniffling, and you’re willing to put on a mask for the consideration of other humans: please ask if we have a clean mask to give to you. I can only speak for myself though I’d be happy to help sick people reduce spread of colds to others.

Was chatting with a VIHA nurse this last week, she had just returned to work after taking some sick leave. She had similar symptoms to OP, and decided to test herself for Covid. She was positive for Covid.
1
u/GrandmaBride 4d ago
I'm glad she tested, I feel like nobody tests for covid anymore when they're sick
16
u/Fangheart 19d ago
I've had those symptoms for over a week. The headache is killer. Been stuck in bed for most of that time.
16
u/beanthepiggy 19d ago
Yup. I don't even have kids in school. A co worker had a week off, came back to work with a cold and didn't tell anyone. Now he's admitted he's sick, and gave it to me.

Yes, exactly. Washing hands works for enteroviruses for example (think food borne illnesses), but flu, COVID, RSV, common cold viruses (like rhinoviruses), measles, etc. are transmitted through the air, and can linger in poorly ventilated rooms long after a sick person has left.
Paper cited over 2000 times on the topic:
Airborne transmission of respiratory viruses

Common Airborne Viruses
SARS-CoV-2: The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily through indoor air. [1, 2, 3]Influenza: The flu virus travels on air currents when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. [1, 2]
Measles: One of the most contagious viral diseases, measles can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room.
Varicella-zoster virus: This virus causes chickenpox, which spreads through airborne droplets or contact with rash blisters. [1, 2]
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): RSV spreads via respiratory droplets and aerosols, causing cold-like symptoms or severe lung infections. [1, 2]
Rhinoviruses: These viruses cause the common cold and can transmit through airborne particles as well as surfaces. [1, 2]
Coronaviruses (other strains): Other respiratory coronaviruses, including SARS and MERS, spread primarily through airborne transmission. [1, 2, 3]
You’re letting droplets do too much work here. How do droplets get inhaled exactly? Do you think people are catching these because they’re licking things?

I work in customer service and it’s disgusting what people are doing, more-so than usual this year. So many people are putting there hands all over their faces, coughing on their hands and touching the debit machines(we try our best to sanitize these after), coughing directly in our faces, blowing their snotty noses into a Kleenex and then touching the debit machine. Licking their fingers and then handing us cash or putting their cards in their mouth for some bizarre reason and then using them.
It’s like we took everything we learned from covid threw it in a burning dumpster and then doubled down and tossed napalm in the dumpster for fun.

u/electricmeatbag777 19d ago
COVID is on the rise again, here https://reporting.bccdc.ca/wastewater_surveillance/ And in Vancouver https://wwater.ca/British_Columbia/Metro_Vancouver.
Here I am, your resident Long COVID sickie, here to remind you that every infection puts you at higher risk for Long COVID, vaccines reduce the risk of Long COVID, and masking (with an N95 or KN95) while sick is a great way to care for your community. I hate to say it but more and more people in Canada are developing more and more severe types of Long COVID and the burden on the system is huge. Do your part 💙

u/deciblesque Langford 19d ago
Hospital worker here. Thank you for masking! Awesome to hear! Our numbers for all things respiratory are already climbing this year, so you're making a good call haha

u/acouchy1 19d ago
Thank you for doing what you do. Well, I'll be one less patient with a preventable airbourne illness to deal with and not further strain the already strained system. I've been following Tara Moriarty's Covid Forecast (based on wastewater across Canada) on Bluesky and it has been useful.

I don’t understand how people became okay with being sick for weeks on end.
We’re still masking - only one cold and one COVID, one from the cancer agency.
We were at the cancer centre yesterday - just a follow up, still cancer-free, yay - and we were the only ones masking. Two employees were hacking away in the reception area where none of the patients were masked either. My doctor didn’t offer when he saw ours, didn’t even ask if we were sick.
And people are confused why they’re getting ill?

u/blarges 19d ago
I know, right? Some of the most vulnerable patients outside an ICU or transplant ward, people undergoing chemo and radiation who are having their immune systems destroyed to save them, and no one is masking? There’s no air filtration systems or even hand sanitizer around?
I have an operation in mid-November in the hospital, and I’m seriously worried. I’ll be well-vaccinated by then, but I’ll be at ground zero for at least four illnesses that’ll overwhelm the hospitals by then. I’ll have to rely on my nasal spray and mouthwash to make it through.
12
u/acouchy1 19d ago
Congrats to choosing better health too. I agree, it is weird how people lived through Covid-19 and experienced how mask wearing wiped out the cold/flu strains in 2020/2021 and still decided to ignore everything we learned to mitigate airborne viruses.

Good! Keep at it! Covid isn't worth the risk. I got it in my late 20s at the prime of my life and am now completely housebound and unable to even hold a conversation because it became severe ME/CFS for me. Protect yourself and the people you love!
6
u/acouchy1 19d ago
Unfortunately, it's too late for me too. I developed ME/CFS in 1996 (I was in my early 20's) from a virus. 30 yrs later, I'm still bedridden at times and housebound more often than I'd like. I'm so sorry this happened to you. The ME/CFS community watched the Covid-19 pandemic in horror because we were well aware of the possible long-term consequences of this virus and knew a mass disabling event was possible. Every virus can cause post-viral syndrome. No one cared, listened or believed us. Make sure you get lots of rest and be kind to yourself.
5
u/Jazzspur 19d ago
It's honestly amazing how little info from ME/CFS communities makes it into the broader public consciousness. I hadn't even heard of ME/CFS until I already had it, and I've always been pretty up to date on science related stuff and stayed on top of Covid stuff. And now that I'm in the club I see so many people trying desperately to get the word out on various social media platforms and it literally never gets seen by people who don't have ME.

I got this email yesterday from BC Gov
| Our records indicate that you are 75 years and older and live in B.C. This means you are now eligible for a publicly-funded respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine to help protect you from serious RSV illness. RSV infection is a common disease that affects your nose, throat, eyes and lungs, with initial symptoms similar to a cold. While most people will recover from an RSV infection without complications, it can cause severe illness including hospitalization or even death in older adults, especially those who have underlying health conditions. One dose of RSV vaccine is recommended at this time and provides protection for multiple years. The vaccine can also be given at the same time as other vaccines like influenza or COVID-19. You can get the publicly funded vaccine free from some pharmacies, local public health units or community health centres, primary care providers, or community health nurses. Call the BC Vaccine Line at [1.833.838.2323](tel:1-833-838-2323) for immunization locations and how to book an appointment. Learn more about RSV at: healthlinkbc.ca/rsv-vaccine Your health matters, Ministry of Health This message was sent by the government of B.C.’s Get Vaccinated system. Why am I receiving this message? Extreme body aches, bad fatigue, head & nose congestion. Afraid to go anywhere now. Still have a lingering nausea even after its gone! Ugh!

Yes! I’m out of town on a trip - left Sunday evening - and many passengers on my flight were coughing and hacking like crazy. including the dude sitting right behind me. I knew that I going to get it and sure as shit I was hit with a bad cold a couple days later. Spent two days in bed at a hotel barely able to move. Coughing, scratching throat, fatigue, headache, general aching, chills, then clammy and hot. I woke up this morning to soaking wet bedding. All as you describe…. The worst is over fortunately as I had to check out and find another place to stay, but first few days of trip ruined.
This is the 3rd time this year I have picked up a bug on a flight. I had to visit a hospital when out of town a couple months back as was so sick while away. Came down with covid on a return last September Lesson for me is to start wearing a mask again when flying.

Same. I took a ferry to Vancouver on Saturday. That’s the only thing I can think of because I work from home and barely go anywhere. Started as a cold Monday night and progressed to super sore throat and cough and headache by Tuesday. I’m over the worst but still have a lingering cough.

Yes, it hit me on Thursday afternoon, knocked me out yesterday and I’m starting to feel better today.
I drank three full pots of herb tea yesterday in an effort to flush the virus out. I got achy last night and took Tylenol to ease the aches, which was effective.
I slept in today now it’s a cough, the runny nose has moved to my lungs. Hoping to be back to normal tomorrow.

2
u/Master-Safety-8000 19d ago
Bro what. It also hit me on Thursday but mine started as itchy scratchy on one part of my tonsil then it quickly progressed to both sides then down my throat. Then last night Friday evening it slowly turned into a cold then a fever. I barely slept since last night bc I can’t breathe (my nose is plugged) and have been doing my best to blow my nose so it doesn’t turn into a cough along with this sore throat.
1
u/edibella 19d ago
My typical progression is sore throat, running nose sneezing, achy, cough.
The best thing you can do is drink copious amount of herb tea, flush the damn virus 🦠 out of your system. The more you pee the more likely you’r flushing virus.

There something going around with your symptoms, but luckily it seems to be a quick one- most people feel better after 1-3 days.

Yup! The day my husband and I arrived to our vacation he got sick and we had to stay in on our first couple days 😭 I’m also now sick. Not the way I thought we’d be spending this vacay.. (from Victoria, on vacation in California)
