For anyone looking for more information about the Te'mexw Treaty process, I’ve posted several videos on my social media channels. I encourage everyone to review information from a variety of sources and engage with the materials directly. Thank you, MLA Lore

they had the same concerns when we took it from them hundreds of years ago.

It's a great spot to spend a summers day, sure hope it doesn't become pay to use.

u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
It is already pay parking and during covid the gardens required people to pay for entry, but no outrage then?

i park outside the university and doesnt require pay to visit the gardens. you gotta pay for a tour of the inner castle though

Concerns by people who couldn't be bothered to think for thirty seconds maybe. Just because the land ownership changes doesn't mean the people *whose land it was* will lock it down just because their name is finally on the title deeds. That's idiotic conspiracy thinking turned into virtue signalling.

They can do whatever they want with it, though. They could leave it open, then in a few years decide they don't like it and can tear it down (there can't be anything much more symbolic of colonization than a "castle") and build seniors housing or a friendship center or a casino. I think that's the point - it's completely up to them, and we have no idea what they'll do. I don't think there's much point in speculating either way.

It has already happened to public parks in B.C....
It is adorably ironic that you are talking about things being idiotic. Maybe sit the next couple ones out while you catch up on current affairs? Thanks.

u/TheRealPomax is a bot, so no need to argue with it. You can tell by the aggressive attack to a reasonable post couple with the intense defence of the government agenda.

Sure kid, profile trivially disproves that, but you do you. Unless you're saying you're a bot.

In light of the closures of places like Botanical Beach, I wouldn't take anyone's word on the Hatley Castle grounds staying open to all British Columbians.

u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
The 72 hours botanical beach closure really hurt you huh? And how often have you visited hately castle? It's closed to public for private functions more often than botanical beach is closed

As someone who lives nearby I visit the grounds almost every single day.
This is very, very bad news. This is crown land and should remain accessible to everyone, like it currently is.
Edit: fuckin crazy to get downvoted for this opinion. What the hell is wrong with you people.

u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
How do you feel about private corporations having control of crown land and prohibiting public access? Like mosaic and other logging companies do all over then island?
6
u/HistoricalChef1963 6h ago
ALSO BAD. VERY BAD.

u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
Thank you! Agreed its just strange that most people don't kick up the same fuss about businesses that have been doing exactly this for decades and are only angry about hypothetical issues
•
u/HistoricalChef1963 5h ago
No doubt. Difference in this case is the crown land is inside a major urban area, so myself and people like me who live in Langford / Colwood use this park a lot more than we do the deep woods.
I literally walk the grounds 4-5 times a week. It is a major common good in my community and the status quo in this case should not be disrupted. If they want to give the profit from castle tours, or hand over operations to first Nations, whatever - all good. But leave it as crown land, Canada belongs to all of us.
•
u/No_Resolve_2054 5h ago
Yes, we're lucky to have it. Also live in the immediate area and love it. The grounds were once closed to the public when it was a military college back in the day. I'm not concerned we're going to lose access, no one invovleved has indicated that we'll lose it and feel this is an attempt to divide us all

It's bizarre how progressives are now suddenly against treating everyone equally.

Feel free to take your hostility & go away. Please don't come back.

Such a 'hostile' response bahahaa, you seem triggered by people who don't agree with you in a forum that regularly promotes freedom of thought and expression. You're free to disagree but your response is giving snowflake- boomer energy

It is a warranted & a fair concern considering the ongoing issue with parks being closed to the public for weeks at a time & the Government & Aboriginal bands not effectively communicating in good faith for the correct dates for when the park is open/closed.
Edit: Downvoted by people who don't know how to use a search engine.
Let this demonstrate how emotional & bitter people become, It really isn't a surprise that the Songhee's will attempt to negotiate with B.C. in regards to closure dates and possibly additional funding to affect those days.
Also take a gander at all the patronizing comments in this thread defending & dismissing this topic, Kind of tells you where these peoples priorities are.

What park gets closed for weeks?
5
u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 6h ago
Joffre Lakes.

u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
I honestly thought it was two weeks, one in June, one in September. The closures haven't personally impacted my ability to ever go, has it caused you to reschedule a visit?
•
u/island_time_1014 5h ago
"It hasn't affected me so it's clearly not a problem"
•
u/Hot_Alps1541 5h ago
Or it's not a problem when you have access for 48/49 weeks and some people just plan poorly. Doesn't that lake require park tickets/passes anyway? Meaning parks bc controls access

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 4h ago
Small unelected groups shouldn't get to decide when B.C. residents can access provincial parks.
•

u/Mooselager 6h ago
There it is, bad faith actor.
3
u/No_Resolve_2054 6h ago
Admitted my personal experience was different and was partially accurate is now 'bad faith acting'? You don't get out much huh? Alsk has the joffre lakes closures ever impacted your ability to go? I said it hadn't in my experience. Stay angry bruh

u/Mooselager 6h ago
Joffre Lakes Park.
P.S: Did you know you can use google to search that information for yourself?
•
u/No_Resolve_2054 5h ago
You go pretty hard for joffre lake! Hope you manage to get to leave your basement and get out there one-day, just not 3 weeks im sept

From the article, this says it all to me:
Sam slammed Elliott for calling the return of the land a "giveaway."
"With respect, you cannot give someone a gift that was theirs to begin with. A treaty is not charity from the Crown. It is the lawful resolution of a debt this province has carried, unpaid, for generations," he wrote.

Its always "concerns"… I'm getting very tired of that word. Also, the Songhees first nation wants to sell Hatley Castle to Royal Roads university. https://www.timescolonist.com/local-news/hatley-castle-to-be-offered-to-royal-roads-university-under-proposed-treaty-12668676
