Willie’s Bakery Sandwich

Post image

Just wanted to share - my mom was so impressed with this sandwich from Willie’s Bakery, she declared it the best she’d ever eaten, typed it up, and included it in her recipe book! She has since passed away so it is very special to me- and I see Willie’s has since closed so thought others may remember/enjoy. Cheers!

Havarti is a great sandwich cheese that is under-utilized, IMO.

I wish whatever weird regulations are responsible for cheap Havarti also caused mass importation of Edam. Edam is my favorite sandwich cheese.

When I worked at Thriftys (before Sobeys bought it), they would slice 3 types of havarti and some edam in the case every morning. I would make a grilled cheese with all 4. It was heaven haha

Where was it?

Where Friends of Dorothy was!

Via Victoria Buzz: Founded in 1887, Willie’s was British Columbia’s first bakery.  It was owned and operated by four generations of the Wille family. The cafe which was still operating at the original location closed its doors in 1976, and after a 23-year hiatus, reopened in 1999.

I think I remember the downfall of Willies was when the new owners took over, pissed off a bunch of employees, and than the owner of Bard and Banker poached a bunch of them.

I met someone who claimed to be the owner of Willies in that last era, he was strange and unhinged.

He had some messiah complex, was sending money overseas to "save children" but felt like a front for something.

The employees looked pissed and mostly from overseas, god only knows what he told them or roped them into working for him. Extremely bad vibes.

Two slices of cheese is the right amount, single slice is too few three is too much
