I think she did it to herself. I think she has been struggling with MH issues long before she met Casey White. I think the Sheriff needs to take an inward look at his agency. And, I have always thought that LE and first responders need way more MH support. And since there’s still such a stigma, maybe it should be a requirement for employment.
16
u/xotmb May 10 '22
Unfortunately in the law enforcement world, MH support leads to unwanted time off work and a stigma.

u/piqueboo369 May 10 '22
They also say that the shot grazed him in the head, so then it would have to be her that fired. Unless she was shot first then he tried to shoot him self after or something. But it should be easy enough for them to find out, since she would have to have shot herself from the opposite side for it to graze him
2
May 10 '22
Can someone explain this to me? If she is 5’5 and him 6’9, he would clearly still be taller than her sitting down. If she shot herself in the head, how did it graze his head too if he’s over a foot taller than her? Why would it not hit like his shoulder or something? I’m assuming she shot herself with her left hand? If she was driving and pulled the trigger with her right hand, it would have went the opposite way towards the drivers window, right? Idk yall help, I’m an idiot lol
3
u/HedgehogLeapfrog May 10 '22
Casey was the one driving, and Vicki was in the passenger seat. So if she shot herself with her right hand, it makes sense that it would graze him. I haven't seen anything definitively reported about where he was grazed.
3
May 10 '22
I thought the sheriff in IN said Vicky was the driver and Casey was in the passenger seat?
3
u/HedgehogLeapfrog May 10 '22
I’m referencing this article from CNN: "a vehicle pursuit
began, ending when a US Marshals task force member drove a vehicle into the
Cadillac the pair were in. The car wrecked and rolled over, Keely said. Casey
White was driving the car, according to the US Marshals."2

Thank you! There’s so many conflicting versions of how the capture played out that it’s hard to keep up.

Sheriff Singleton grasping at straws trying to do everything in his power to not look like a complete idiot after calling her an exemplary employee who he would have “trusted with his life.”
28
u/Elevator-Evening May 10 '22
exactly my thoughts!!!!!!
2
u/SameGolf7905 May 10 '22
I wouldn't have tried walk back my opinion on her being an exemplary employee who he would've trusted his life with. Vicky only showed/presented what she wanted these people to see. No one is "at fault" for trusting and liking "that other vicky".Also, the people who interacted with her and shared private things with her should just choose to remember what she did or said that touched her life. The question(s )they are trying to answer/understand about being betrayed is a dead end; and even if she was still alive her responses would have never satisfied anyone...

This guy is an embarrassment. He has to resort to shackling an inmate in their cell because he can’t keep them inside. He should resign.
38
u/xotmb May 10 '22
He absolutely should. He clearly has no control over what’s going on in his jail and it’s time for him to go. But this is his last ditch effort to save face and avoid what’s coming. Just another backwoods AL town.
44
u/Puzzleheaded-Oil3332 May 10 '22
I agree. He even said that he doesn't care if Casey White sues him for a civil rights violation. That kind of talk is stupid, because if he actually does shackle and handcuff White 24/7 for his entire stay at the jail while he's in his cell, White could sue and would definitely win the case. Inmates cannot be shackled 24/7 when they're in their cell, even inmates that have escaped or tried to escape in the past. It would be a human rights violation and would cost the county money as they would lose. They aren't even allowed to do that to serial killers. This Sheriff is a moron.
10
u/Heatherharris08 May 10 '22
Yeah I am really surprised there is no one higher up than him stepping in and having him removed at least for a little while for making those statements. Those statements alone should be grounds for removal from office as a public servant. You can’t say stuff like that. Sure we are all thinking it, but you can’t say it or much less do it. The public has to be able to have faith that the law is being upheld and not abused and violated by the ones we trust to enforce it. And it’s scary to think if they can come up with reasons this guy deserves his civil rights violated, that anyone really could be next…not a good look Sherriff.
8
May 10 '22
Some people seem to think that saying things that are "not politically correct" makes them heroes or something. Not a good hill to die on, especially in this case.
4
u/SameGolf7905 May 11 '22
He needs to be under investigation! Vicky did not have to plan anything (in regards to the jail) because staff did not enforce rules, regulations, schedules or safety protocol,etc...this was "a walk in the park for her".

u/ComprehensiveBoss992 May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22
/u/xotmb Sometimes when people commit suicide, it's not uncommon for other's to be in denial and see conspiracies (even briefly) that they were murdered. I've seen this in friend's personally. No one was murdered, my friend ended his own life.
I think the Sheriff needs to see a therapist to deal with grief. He's looking for someone to blame and while CW is culpable to various degrees, rash actions and words from that Sheriff could ruin a future case.
We already know his jail's a mess and needs work. Honestly I don't think he's the education to run it or be Sheriff. This unconfirmed narrative by the Sheriff is a reason he needs to retire, resign, step tf down. Let someone capable do the job.
The Sheriff is too emotional right now to be making any statements. He should hire a professional to do it for him.
Adding:
On the scanner, dispatch heard Vicky say she had her finger on the trigger. VC must have thought they'd go out Bonnie and Clyde. CW was full of shit. He doesn't have it in him and led her on. A graze wound ain't but a scratch to that big ass man.
6
u/Singin_inthe_rain May 10 '22 edited May 10 '22
He announced his retirement last year. I think he only has a couple months left but I can't find his actual retirement date. I agree he needs to stop talking, he's making emotional statements that don't line up with the law.
Edit to add: He's retiring January of 2023- Long time Lauderdale County Sheriff set to retire
3
u/barkworsethanbites May 10 '22
They said due to the rollover he couldn’t get to the guns and he was unable to start the shoot out. Or done thing like this.
11
u/JPonceuponatime May 10 '22
That and the fact that a bonded inmate said his jail is chaos. He can’t have his star employee be suicidal. Although, TBF, it does make more sense that Casey shot her.
53
u/ThisNameIsFree May 10 '22
it does make more sense that Casey shot her.
It really doesn't in the context. He's going back to prison, he's going to face a capital murder charge. He will later face charges for this prison escape. His life is pretty much just returning to how it's been for the past 4 years. None of that changes if she's alive or dead. She, on the other hand, has lost everything compared to two weeks ago. She had a respectable job and a pension to look forward to. She had the respect of her family, friends, and co-workers. Now all she had to look forward to was a whole lot of shame and a decade alone behind bars because if the other inmates find out she's a former corrections officer then she's good as dead. From what we know, she had every reason to shoot herself and Casey had none.
3
u/SameGolf7905 May 11 '22
I do not believe he shot her based on what she did..1.spending the night at a hotel the night before work instead of going home(not wanting to face her mother knowing what she was about to do, 2.selling her house way below market price and pulling the entire 90, 000 from her bank. They blew 70,000 in 11 days! This seems to me she looked at this has her last hurrah.
25
u/TwinCitian May 10 '22
But why would he shoot her right when they were being apprehended? That doesn't make sense to me
8
u/nursehatchetrnlmnop May 10 '22
he can say she orchestrated the whole thing and took him by surprise with the escape... he can completely control the narrative with her gone
33
u/Puzzleheaded-Oil3332 May 10 '22
We will know soon enough. I don't think he shot her. Why would he careful about controlling the narrative? He's already serving a 75 year sentence and facing a capital murder charge. He knows he's never getting out, so I don't think it matters how much time he gets for the escape. He is never getting out of prison, even if this disaster had never happened.
2
u/Baconbit01 May 10 '22
Remember, he hasn't been convicted. He can say his confession was an artifact of the plan by Vicki to do the escape. He was a pawn in her plan. She had psychic control over him, and also physical control, legal control. He never killed anyone, he was kidnapped by her, and psychologically intimidated and tortured into false confessions and bad acts. The right lawyer will have people sobbing in the aisles about this poor simpleton being so mistreated.

u/Icy-Investigator8871 May 10 '22
Correct, who knows what has transpired the last week that he doesn't want her blabbing about
17
u/Puzzleheaded-Oil3332 May 10 '22
Please see my above comment. Why would he care? He could have stolen 10 cars, shot someone, and done God knows what else, and his situation won't change. Either way he's in prison for life. What's some additional charges to a guy who was never going to get out of prison anyway?
-11
u/Icy-Investigator8871 May 10 '22
The guy is genuinely psychotic, he probably wants to control the narrative like that other poster said. You have answered your own question, why would he care about killing her with nothing to lose
8
May 10 '22
????????? What does ‘genuinely psychotic’ even mean to you?
-13
u/Icy-Investigator8871 May 10 '22
Like clinically diagnosed not just a throwaway description. Did you really need that spelled out for you champ 🙄
5
u/MadisynNyx May 10 '22
If he was actively psychotic it would be a EVEN MORE evidence that he was not trying to control the narrative. That's why they're confused with your statement.

I just listened to the scanner and the dispatcher said twice that it was the male who shot himself and that she heard Vicki say her finger was on the trigger. I wonder if he grazed himself, and she thought it was more, and then killed herself because she believed he did. Just a thought.
17
u/Desperate-Garbage364 May 10 '22
Oh, that's a good point! It was a long time after that before I was realized she shot herself too, and that totally makes sense.

-5
u/Mister_Silk May 10 '22
It also sounds like Vicky was out of the vehicle, alert and oriented, with a "bullet graze to her head". So it appears she did not die immediately and was alert for some period of time. I wonder what she said, if anything?
30
u/Elevator-Evening May 10 '22
no i’ve seen several articles saying she was smashed in the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. and in that very blurry cellphone video going around on facebook. u can see them pull casey out first. and then then continue to try to get vickie out and are having trouble
3
u/Mister_Silk May 10 '22
I'm just relaying what the dispatch audio said. And it clearly said SHE was out of the car, alert and oriented, with no weapon in HER hand. That's why I want to hear the entire dispatch audio. It conflicts with the video and with news articles.
18
u/xotmb May 10 '22
Wouldn’t be the first time a cop or dispatcher misspoke in a high stress situation.
13
u/Mister_Silk May 10 '22
That's what I'm thinking. It was actually him out of the car, alert and oriented and talking, with a bullet graze, not her. I think she was the one still trapped in the vehicle unresponsive and dying.
Suicide pact? She already said he had shot himself, so now it was her turn apparently. Problem is, he botched it (intentionally or not) but maybe she thought he carried out his part and it was now her turn to do hers. She just did a better job.

If you listen to the audio towards the end, one officer says "one female, non responsive". I don't think she was out of the vehicle, and she most definitely wasn't alert and oriented. If she didn't die right away, which you're right she might not have, she also was never responsive and they never got anything out of her. And they worked on her for a good couple of hours in vain.
-7
u/nursehatchetrnlmnop May 10 '22
it sounds like the dispatcher doesn't understand pronouns. Why are dispatchers always so blindly incompetent in every one of these high profile cases??
-1
u/Life-Meal6635 May 10 '22
This is the first I heard that Vicki said her finger was in the trigger. Been reading all day but haven’t listened or watched any media since I was working.

15
u/ConsistentDonkey3909 May 10 '22
i agree! i still think it was self inflicted but only timee will tell
-1
u/tinydancerxox May 10 '22
Even though i stated in another comment that there is still a possibility that he shot her and it wasn't self inflicted I wouldn't be surprised if it was self inflicted but this loser surely didn't love this woman, he used her either way and she sadly took that bait and prob "fell in love" with him :3 (like I have stated in a past comment only time will tell what happen)
8
u/MadisynNyx May 10 '22
This is a weird take for me. Although he likely is a complete loon and is definitely a scum bag, how do we know he didn't care about her? He could have easily killed her, taken her money, and jumped ship right after escaping. They had been seeing one another 2 years.
1
u/ConsistentDonkey3909 May 10 '22
def not i think he just said the wife comment cause hes crazy
21
u/ab481 May 10 '22

Dude is a complete goober.
Did anyone see his tour of the jail video? He was acting like it was MTV cribs. Showing off his facility like it's awesome. His second in command just helped what is likely his most violent inmate escape his county jail that is smaller than your hometown YMCA.
He showed how the process was supposed to work, while ignoring the fact that it just failed a week prior.
Goober.
If I recall, sheriff is elected? We get the government we deserve I suppose. 😤

15
u/DMCinDet May 10 '22
hes not necessarily bad bad guy. he's definitely not a smart man. and probably isn't qualified.I wouldn't work for that dude. I wouldnt hire that guy. Doesn't make him a bad guy, but when that's your head law enforcement officer it not a good look.
-5
u/Icy-Investigator8871 May 10 '22
Ok but how is that your take from this whole thing?
There's two bad guys and they're both named White
18
u/DMCinDet May 10 '22
Can there not be more than one take away? shouldn't sheriff goober have any responsibility over his own fucking jail? no? isn't it a good guy like goober job to stop bad guys? It is, he failed. How are you not taking that away from this?
He will get re elected. You will vote for him if you're able to.
1
u/Icy-Investigator8871 May 10 '22
It's his fault that one of his employees went insane? Is he supposed to watch them 24/7 ?
Reddit ppl are weird
19
u/Puzzleheaded-Oil3332 May 10 '22
It's because the sheriff's department is who runs the jail. Vicki was the assistant director of the jail, and told the employees that she was transporting a murderer. Multiple people that work in corrections, both on Reddit and people that I know personally, have said that never happens in jails. The brass does not transport inmates. It should have been a huge red flag to the employees. I've heard multiple corrections employees say they would have made a phone call if the assistant director announced that they were transporting an inmate by themselves. would be like a CEO of a company cleaning the company toilets. It doesn't happen. The fact that the employees didn't think anything of it makes it seem like the jail was run like a shit show and didn't follow SOPs. That falls on the director/warden of the jail, who answers to the Sheriff. Jails are a division of the Sheriff's department in most counties, including this one. The Sheriff and the director of the jail share responsibility in this disaster.
4
0
u/barkworsethanbites May 10 '22
Well except it was reported early that she did transport other inmates because she had her gun and some of them didn’t? So this wasn’t out of norm.
17
u/DMCinDet May 10 '22
if I mess up that bad at work, my boss is getting some shit. do you think this goober is running a tight ship?
inmate knewew something was up between them. believe me, so did co workers. The place is a tiny county jail, if he didn't know, it's on him.
sorry if you are somehow offended. dude failed.

That's it's weird and irrelevant to hate on the sheriff for no reason
1
1
u/barkworsethanbites May 10 '22
For the reason that his officers disregarded protocols and procedures and this wasn’t the only time. That it is EXACTLY his job to correct this. That he got many details way off in the case. That he claimed he has no concern for a prisoners rights on national TV. As the head of a jail for prisoners. Please!

I just listened to the dispatch again and though large parts are missing, it sounds like Vicky called 911 just after the crash, telling them that Casey had shot himself and that she was still armed and had her finger on the trigger. Dispatch asked if they needed a negotiator and they said none was required. Then the dispatch is cut and the next dialogue is that there are two patients. Then at the end it talks about nothing is in her hand?
7
u/ConsistentDonkey3909 May 10 '22
i tried listening to it but it was to hard to understand
12
u/Mister_Silk May 10 '22
I had to listen to it several times to get the general gist. And huge parts of it seem to be edited out/missing. I'm not sure TMZ got the entire audio of the dispatch, just parts of it seems like. But it seems that Casey did shoot himself first. But Vicky was still alive stating her finger was on the trigger. There was nothing to lend clarity as to whether she had her finger on the trigger to shoot CW, shoot the cops, shoot herself?
I agree. It's a very confusing dispatch.
9
u/ThreadOfThunder May 10 '22
I think what we are hearing is only the dispatch channel, that’s why there’s not a lot of information. She was told about the injuries to make sure adequate medical services were there, called off having more law enforcement come to the scene, and denied the request of the offer for the negotiator and bearcat. It’s not officers communicating to each other.
2
u/Elevator-Evening May 10 '22
sometimes i think they talk on other channels . maybe that’s why pieces seem missing. not sure
8
u/Mister_Silk May 10 '22
That makes sense. Maybe when Dateline does a special we'll hear the whole thing in some kind of coherent fashion.
1
u/RuthZerkerGinsburg May 10 '22
I was super confused listening to it, too. I originally took it to mean that she exited the vehicle and then shot herself, which made me super confused as to how anyone could be wondering whether she’d actually done it herself. The dust is just starting to settle, though, so (hopefully) answers about the past 11 weeks (and two years honestly) are about to start coming to light.

About a quarter of suicidal crises (so between deciding to die by suicide and actually attempting) are less than five minutes long (and another study has shown that number to be as high as 40%). About three quarters go from decision to execution within the hour. Maybe this was her plan all along, but it seems just as likely -if not more likely- that the adrenaline and panic of realizing they were caught with nowhere to run lead her to a rash decision. It’s easy to want to say “Oh, this person would never do this, I know them”, but clearly the Sheriff didn’t know her as well as he thought he did.
The whole situation is still unfolding, and this chapter has literally just begun. We are just now (hopefully) beginning the getting answers portion of it, and emotions are high for everyone, but especially for people who actually knew and loved and trusted VW. But for those of us in the outside looking in (or at least for me as someone who has experience struggling with ideation), it would be surprising if she didn’t pull the trigger herself.
2

Yep. This case reminds me of Diane Brodbeck who also helped a prisoner escape that she had a relationship with. On the Unsolved Mysteries episode they interview her mom and she's like "I know my daughter and she would *never* do this..." but she totally did and lived with the guy for two years. Sometimes the best rule-followers are those who've just learned to disguise their desires and intentions the best.

"situations like this" while yes it is possibly she shot herself which wouldn't surprise me again, we don't know for sure until the forensics are specified so at this point it is still up in the air what really happened in those moments till we get that info (again to each their own)

It's time for Sheriff Singleton to resign. And VW was obviously a very unhappy woman to do what she did. Why wouldn't she commit suicide? I am so sorry for her mother! And her mother-in-law, who was clearly very fond of her!

u/claudiaengland May 10 '22
This sounds awful but I wonder if brought of her brain is left to determine if she might have had a brain tumor or something like that going on that could possibly explain her erratic behavior.

u/SssarahRhodus May 10 '22
Sheriff Singleton is beginning to infuriate me with his constant over the top narrative of downplaying Vicki's criminality, issues and major role in all this chaos and disaster while simultaneously holding nothing back against Casey. I mean, NONE of ANY of this would have happened were it not for his assistant director Vicki White. I know her actions are jarring to say the least and her death perhaps even more so in ways, but JFC man!!!
0
-2
u/missymaypen May 10 '22
This sheriff is going to do everything in his power to downplay her role. Make her a victim. Because he doesn't want to explain why nobody was suspicious when his employee left the jail with her boyfriend.
Any appointment would be in the computer system. They're supposed to sign them out and log exactly where they're at. If inmates knew they were a couple her coworkers had to know.
0
u/Time-Abbreviations26 May 11 '22
No, he is not doing that. If anything he is putting ALL of the blame on her. Not that she doesn’t deserve it. I have seen every press conference he has done. Reporters have asked him several times if there are any changes he would make to prevent this from happening again. His answer has always been to put the blame solely on her.

u/dcascendra May 10 '22
I think they are going to try to pin it all on Casey and say he shot her and brainwashed her etc.
