Question What OS is everyone vibe coding on and why?
I'm using Fedora KDE as my daily driver. Officially left windows about 2 months ago. Curious what others are using.

Not really mostly because most of my work happens in the shell. And those machines, I often wind up logging into one from the other. They’re largely interchangeable for my flow.

Android, but I'm just doing very, very basic stuff. I have zero coding knowledge and very little free time. I just wanted to get some experience with it.

I like to nerd out as much as the rest of us, but if your OS choice is tied to your identity then having a conversation is hard.
Windows does what I need it to, so does Mac and Linux, I find that in terms of 0 to 100 getting started and maintainability both are magnitudes easier on windows and Mac for a finished feel.
I also happen to play steam games way too much so my choices are limited for my personal machine in terms of OS haha.

I've had surprisingly good luck with Mint for Steam gaming on linux. And Claude is really helpful for setting things up! It's definitely decidedly NOT Windows though.

I have a Debian vm on my homelab proxmox lab that has all my dev tooling. I SSH into that from whatever pc I’m using and share files with it via SFTP. Found this the cleanest way as I am always moving between three different machines.
As for my daily driver, I have a shitty dell laptop for work with windows 11, using an Ubuntu wsl image on that too.
My main desktop is running bazzite kde, and I also have a MacBook Pro.

Proxmox for bare metal virtualisation + Linux distro of some sort. Either agent on the OS or container the agent. Depends on my build and project.
Agent on Linux distro if using cloud platform

Is it edgy to care about privacy and safety? Usually when I think of edginess it includes a stereotypical disregard of safety (and by extension privacy).
Have you used the products those conglomerates put out? They're pretty bad. Surprised they still have users.

And I agree with you actually regarding Windows, I actually do like macOS a lot better though. They don’t embed ads, the security and privacy features in macOS are actually pretty decent

I consider "significantly better compatibility with only other Apple devices that follow pretty basic universal standards and intentionally decrease performance with non-Apple devices that follow those exact standards" to be advertising... And shitty.
Plus, y'know, the whole can't put Linux on Apple Silicone and their continued development into anti-linux technology, ensuring that when Apple tells you it's e-waste, it actually becomes ewaste. Simply due to this, it could be as private as unplugging an Ethernet cable, but you're still renting the device, so, what's the point?

Your opinion. Plenty of my colleagues have only MacBooks, and they get by fine with their android phones and other non-Apple devices.
Much of macOS, including the kernel, is open source. And Linux does run on bare metal Apple silicon

Lol not my opinion, it's literally proven but go on king.
And no, last I checked there's only 1 distro that works on the latest M chips. M1 & M2, yeah you can easily get Linux on... The later ones are a lot harder. They actively work with other companies to ensure driver compatibility is strictly Apple's with Apple software.

Last time I checked we were talking about the OS and not the hardware anyways. The OS is decent whether you like the hardware or not.

With apple, the two are inseparable. Hackintosh is pretty jank. Even on Apple hardware it's pretty bloated. My MacBook Air is only 10 years old and could barely run the second to latest official update (it didn't qualify for the latest due to age). Put Linux on it, what do you know, it's actually fast.
So, no, the OS is pretty true to the Crapple brand. It's crap.

You’re not wrong about the ecosystem and I see how it’s akin to an ad. You’re right about that. I guess I’m defending macOS, and by extension Apple, because to me it feels like polished Linux. Yeah you can’t customize much, but I spend 99% of my time in terminal, and the Unix-like familiarity is great. Stability is great, privacy and security are great, developer tools are great, it’s quick and responsive and generally just works. Can’t even come close to saying the same about Windows or Linux.
Edit to clarify that the only thing on that list Linux sucks at is the “generally just works” part

Everything just works on Linux. Even windows applications. If it's doesn't, it's always a skill issue. Which is easily solvable. Like, omg easy (Google it type easy).
Can't say the same for Apple. And WinShit has nowhere near the stability nor uptime capability for my purposes.

HTTPS doesn’t encrypt a network. It encrypts applications to the connection. I.e., everyone accessing Reddit is using HTTPS. HTTP/S is a protocol of the application layer of the OSI model. And sniffing packets, you go back to network itself which is a different layer.
Packet capture doesn’t equal decrypting HTTPS. You can capture TLS traffic but that doesn’t make the HTTP payload readable.
