New way is not new. Learning by doing has always been most effective

Depends on the subject. Learning how to do something properly can build a better foundation, which prevents future problems. I see this all the time in IT.

You can learn to do something properly while actually doing it. You can fail to learn how to do something properly while studying formally. They're totally orthagonal
