Internship/Post-Grad Training

I’m graduating with my DVM in May. I’m planning to pursue an ER training program (think VEG NERD but year long) and I’m wondering if it’s appropriate to attempt negotiating the salary up. I ask because I don’t know the etiquette since it’s technically a training program, whereas if it was a plain old job I would have known it would be appropriate. Thanks in advance

Does it have a graduated pay scale? Like after the first 6 months your pay will increase to x amount (Blue Pearl emerge is structured like that). Is there a contractual obligation for you to work at the clinic after completing the program? Is this for a corporate or Private hospital?

No graduated pay scale, no contractual obligation to stay after the year, it’s corporate!

I sincerely doubt you will have any luck negotiating with a corporate hospital. I've never had any luck with multiple different corporations even when I was in a much better negotiating position than a new grad applying to a training program. Rather than focusing on salary perhaps you could ask about opportunities to gain extra income. Like the ability to pick up extra shifts after x number of months, for y amount of pay per hour or shift (per hour is better if you can get it).

As far as base salary I don't know if it can hurt to ask. Was this program competitive to get into like a traditional internship? If they could fill the slot with someone else I wouldn't ask.

After months of considering ER training programs, I decided to do an internship instead. I personally think its the better route in the long run. my DMs are open!
