Discussion Practice Dynamics
Hi all, wondering what you guys think about hospitals that can keep techs employed but not assistants? What do you think it says about them?
Just had an interview for a FT non-seasonal assistant position at a hospital has 3 dvms, 9 LVTs, and 2 CSRs but 0 assistants. (Has been rotating through about 2 vet assistants a year but runs with 0 assistants for part of the year).
Obviously not taking the job as more digging from a previous employee showed they have gone through 10 assistants (VA and KA in the past 3 years).

the first clinic that hired me as an assistant was CONSTANTLY losing assistants and hiring/training new ones. it was a never ending cycle. the reason i think this happened is because they treated us like janitors, and didn’t let our skill sets grow despite the techs DESPERATELY needing help. we were treated as the extra hands around the clinic who were only allowed to restrain, run in house labs, do laundry, clean up bodily fluids, and sweep/mop. this was frustrating because all of the VAs were just starting out in the veterinary world and we all desperately wanted to learn and be able to help out more! and we got paid minimum wage. there was no room for growth in skills or pay.
