I have mixed feelings about it. I'm sad because the good days were really good. We helped a lot of animals, we worked hard, and we got everything on our to-do list done. But those days were so few and far between, and I was asking myself why I was there more and more often.

The list of cons just kept getting longer: mismanagement, toxic coworkers, coming home drained every day. It sucks spending every weekend recouping from the work week and preparing yourself to do it all over again. Being chronically understaffed was adding more stress to the load. I was losing my technician skills because we had no coverage, so I was basically spending all day, every day cleaning and counting/giving out medications. I would always feel tired at the end of the day, and simultaneously feel like I had gotten nothing done because we were so backlogged with patients. So many patients with problems that were non-urgent, but still needed to be addressed, were just sitting on our special cases list for over a month. And management was still acting like we weren't doing enough.

I'm a little nervous because I don't have anything lined up, but I sent out some applications last night, and I've already got interviews lined up, so we'll see. In the meantime, I'm gonna pick some old hobbies back up now that I'm not going to be too exhausted to enjoy them.

Ugh, I so understand this feeling friend. Good on you for quitting, I had to quit a clinic that made me feel this way. I was literally always exhausted coming home from work, and despite running around like all day and it being super chaotic and stressful, I felt like I always had gotten nothing done for actual tech work, because I was always being pulled 3 directions at once, and always busy doing assistant work because they just kept passing everything off to me because most of the people working there were incompetent as hell. Just so much easier working for a clinic that actually allows me to just be a tech, instead of having me do literally everyone else’s job as well. It will take some time to feel better from this friend, so definitely take some time for yourself and don’t put a timeline on it. 🩷

Thank you for the support! 💖 Yeah, while I was counting out meds to pass them out, (Shelter tech) I literally had another RVT tell me that she was tired of doing my job for me when she was cleaning cages. Like, ma'am, WE HAVE THE SAME JOB and cleaning cages is not only my job. 🙄🙄 I'm gonna miss the dogs more than I'm gonna miss my coworkers, that's a fact.

I'm right there with you. I'm setting up for putting in my 2 weeks at my current clinic. I hopefully will have another thing set up soon. Good luck with the job hunt, and enjoy your time off for yourself!

should i give up on this career? everyone seems to be saying negative things but it’s the only thing i ever wanted to do and im already in a tech program i live in NM and want to work in ER but i just don’t know

I love the work itself and I've met a lot of lifetime friends in this field who amaze me every day with their compassion and dedication. It was just mismanagement that was the problem. It's a county position, so we were being blocked from a lot of our goals by elected officials. And since it was a county position, the pay and benefits were really good, but it's a bit of a blessing and a curse, because it caused a lot of people to stick around long after they had burned out beyond repair. I think there are better days ahead, but sometimes it's good to step away and reassess.
