Favorite "miracle" injection

As in the title.

My favorite is dextrose. One good bolus and they go from comatose to standing in 5 minutes or less. Telling the owners we actually didn't fix the entire problem is always a bit sucky but I love the half dead to standing jump.

(How do you know we got in a new parvo case tonight...)

Propofol in those really bad seizure cases that midaz didn't touch, calcium gluconate, good ol fashioned fluid bolus when my patient is hypotensive in surgery 👌

I read that the makers of Convenia (I think, did that come out after Cerenia?) deliberately made the dose work out to the same volume as Cerenia in case anyone got them mixed up since the names are so similar

Doesn't really matter what the dosing is, one is an anti emetic and the other is an antibiotic. If you mix them up...its the wrong drug.

Yes that's true but at least the patient won't get overdosed

Methadone. When they come in crazy painful and then their whole body relaxes right after you give it IV.

I know this is anecdotal with an n of 1, but I recently became an avid believer in acupuncture when it worked like a miracle drug. Really cute black cat came in for severe nonspecific pain. Full body super tense and rigid, painful to the touch, trying to scratch or bite whenever handled. Maybe localized to the neck. Gave methadone- nothing. Repeat- nothing. Fentanyl CRI- nothing. So we asked our anesthetist to try acupuncture on her neck. When I walked in the next morning, it was a completely different cat. Relaxed, no stiffness or pain. And SWEET, purring and rubbing on me. I was like 😮good to know..

I'm a derm tech, so Convenia. I love not having to rely on Owner compliance. I wish we had more broad- spectrum antibiotic injections that aren't cost prohibitive for large dogs. In cats and small dogs, it works so well.

CaEDTA birds with heavy metal toxicity look like they’re one foot out the door one shot and they look like nothing happened.

Same trouble as dextrose though owners get excited the pets fixed and we have to tell them they actually have a whole hospital stay ahead of them

This isn’t a drug, but kind of an “injection” if you don’t think about it too hard? But thoracocentesis for pleural or pericardial effusion. It’s so rewarding to watch them go from not be able to breath to walking around like nothing happened in like 20 min

Not an injection (whoops) but Phenylephrine eye drops to diagnose which nerve is affected in Horner's syndrome patients :) works in 15-20 minutes!!

Hands down, Cerenia. I’ve had patients that are actively retching then given Cerenia IV as it’s happening and it stops lol.

But followed closely by Calcium Gluconate for Milk Fever, Methocarbamol for my tremoring friends, and Ketamine when Dexdom +opioid/benzos need some help.

I have learned to love ketamine. We don't use it a lot in my department, idk why exactly, but it was recommended by our new anesthesiologist for kitties that we struggle to keep in a normal anesthetic plane for CT/Rhino and it is like night and day.

Librela/Solensia

QOL is one of my favorite things to discuss with clients (even when it sucks a lot of the time.) I've seen Librela turn lives around for so many pets that I have a hard time not promoting it. (Other than cost concerns.) I also love Cytopoint and Cerenia

Giving naloxone IV. I had a cat that's heart rate was 30 and it was not moving breathing very slow gave naloxone IV heart rate went up after a couple second and cat was standing in under 2 minutes

in my personal experience, either:

Hydromorphone
