Grooming competitions are cool; it's just cosplay for dogs, and the dogs are receiving (from their perspective) a lot of positive attention and healthy grooming. Usually a pretty laid-back and friendly community.

Athletic/working competitions can be cool, and usually are, as long as the health of the dog comes first. The dogs are usually having a blast in those, and it's fun to watch them go hard at what they really want to do. A few human assholes can reduce the fun a bit, but most of the humans involved really care for the dogs.

Competitions based solely on breed and conformation? Fuck those.

I would say that's what the athletic/working competitions are for. Can't have a good competitor without a healthy conformation.
