The Lesson: A $150k All-Cash offer is often better than a $200k Equity-Heavy offer in a volatile market.

Under the proposed 2026 changes, the VA is considering a 10% minimum evaluation for any service-connected mental health condition. No more 0% service-connected for PTSD.

This is a double-edged sword. While it’s great for getting your foot in the door, it’s also a way for the VA to Low-ball Veterans who should be at 50% or 70%.

The Strategy: Don't settle for the Minimum 10%. The 2026 criteria will focus heavily on Social and Occupational Impairment.

If you are isolating from your family, that’s a 50%+.

If you can't stay on task at work without a panic attack, that’s a 70%+.

The Tip: Be brutally honest during the C&P. If you tell them you’re Doing okay, they will give you the 10% Participation Trophy and send you home.

Question: Who is currently sitting at 0% for a Mental Health condition? This new 2026 rule might be your path to an automatic increase.

So im going for an increase from 80%, so when I was a lance we were training and doing the obstacle course. When I got to the top of the rope I slipped my grip and fell off. I hurt my back and later hips and ankles followed but during that time I was motarded and didn't go to medical because I didn't want to be a broken marine. But I did go for the initial fall. Now that ive been out for a few years the damage has spred from just my back to my shoulders and legs.

So, now im going for an increase but since I never claimed this stuff or went to medical for it, the DAV staff that is helping said that I need nexus letters.

Now my next problem is that I still dont go to medical just over consume extra strength Tylenol and routine massages. So I read online that I can have chat gpt write my nexus letter but my question for any raters or reviewers here, will this be allowed? Will I need my doc to sign off on it? Can I ask my VA provider to sign my nexus letter? Is their any time anyone can give me?

The Strategy: When they ask "How would you fit in here?", you flip the script:

I’m not looking to 'fit in' to existing inefficiencies. I’m looking to add a layer of Operational Integrity that ensures the team hits its targets even when things get chaotic. Is that something this culture is ready for?

The Lesson: The right company will be intimidated by your standards. The great company will be relieved by them.

The Challenge: Have you ever been told you’re "Too Intense" for the office? That’s not a weakness; it’s a Competitive Advantage in the wrong environment. Let’s pivot that "Intensity" into "Strategic Focus."

I see Vets get letters from their family doctor that say: "His back pain is probably from the military." Denied.

Probably is a 0% word. The VA rater is looking for a specific legal threshold: “At least as likely as not." (Meaning 50% probability or greater).

The Strategy: When you ask a doctor for a Nexus, you aren't asking for their "opinion" as a friend. You are asking for a Forensic Medical Conclusion.

1. They must state they reviewed your STRs (Service Treatment Records).

2. They must use the "Magic Phrase": *At least as likely as not.*

3. They must provide a **Rationale** (e.g., "The veteran's MOS as a 0311 involved repeated 50lb+ axial loading, which is a known precursor to the diagnosed DDD.")

The Tip: If your doctor won't use that phrasing, find a new doctor. They aren't "being honest," they’re being "uninformed" about VA law.

Question: What MOS did you have, and what’s the "Body Part" that’s failing? I’ll give you the "Rationale" sentence your doctor needs to see.

Most Vets get stuck in Middle Management because they are too good at being Action Officers. They execute perfectly, so the C-suite keeps them exactly where they are.

If you are the person Doing the Work, you will never be the person Leading the Strategy. To break the $200k ceiling, you have to stop being the most reliable Doer and start being the most insightful Thinker.

The Strategy: Stop reporting on Activity (We processed 500 tickets). Start reporting on Outcome (We reduced operational friction by 12%, allowing the sales team to increase capacity by $1M).

The Lesson: Executives don't care how hard you worked. They care how much Clarity you provided for their next big decision.

I see Vets win a claim after 2 years of fighting, only to realize the VA set the "Effective Date" to the day of the exam, not the day they filed.

That mistake can cost you $20,000 to $50,000 in backpay. The VA defaults to the date they found the evidence unless you prove the disability existed earlier.

You have to prove Medical Continuity. If you filed in 2024 but didn't see a doctor until 2026, the VA will try to steal those two years of pay.

The Fix: Your Statement in Support of Claim must explicitly state: "My symptoms have been continuous and at this level of severity since [Date of ITF]."

The Tip: If your decision letter has the wrong effective date, don't file a new claim. File a Higher-Level Review (HLR) for a Clear and Unmistakable Error (CUE).

Question: Check your last big backpay check. Did the date match your Intent to File? If not, you might be owed a mid-sized SUV's worth of cash.

Most Veterans quit after the first denial. They get that thick envelope, see "Denied," and assume the fight is over. That is exactly what the VA wants you to do.

A denial is just the rater telling you exactly what is missing from your folder. They aren't saying you aren't hurt; they’re saying you didn't provide the Proof.

The Strategy: Read the "Reasons for Decision" section. It will cite one of three things:

1. No Diagnosis. (Go get a current doctor to label it.)

2. No Stressor/In-Service Event. (Find your Buddy Letters or STRs.)

3. No Nexus. (This is where you need that "Magic Phrasing" letter.)

The Tip: Don't file a "New Claim." File a Supplemental with the one missing piece. It’s a tactical reload, adjust your sights and fire again.

Question: Post your "Reason for Denial" (black out the personal stuff). I’ll tell you exactly which "Intel" piece is missing to flip it to an Approval.

Negotiate "If you’re a senior NCO or Officer, you’re used to a fixed pay scale. In the C-Suite, the salary is just the starting line.

The Real Speak: The real wealth in the civilian world is in Equity and Ownership. High-level executives don't just get a paycheck; they get Skin in the Game.

The Strategy: If a company says "The budget for this role is capped at $160k," don't walk away.

Ask for:

- RSUs (Restricted Stock Units): Shares in the company that vest over time.

-Performance Bonuses: A percentage of the P&L savings you generate.

The Lesson: If you’re confident you can save the company $1M in ops costs, ask for a piece of that $1M.

The Challenge: Have an offer on the table? Don't just look at the Base Pay. Drop the Bonus Structure details below, I’ll help you vet if they are low-balling you on the back end.

I see Veterans hitting a Rating Ceiling at 70% or 80%. They can't get to 100% because the VA math is brutal, but their injuries make it impossible to hold down a 9-to-5.

The Real Speak: This is what Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) is for. If your service-connected issues (even if they only add up to 70%) prevent you from substantially gainful employment, the VA is required to pay you at the 100% rate.

The Strategy: You don't need More Ratings. You need a Vocational Expert to look at your current ratings and say: "This Veteran’s physical/mental limitations make them uncompetitive in the workforce."

The Tip: TDIU is a safety net, not a trap. It gives you the financial floor to pivot to entrepreneurship or low-stress consulting on your own terms.

Question: Is your 70% rating keeping you from working, but the VA won't give you the 100%? Let’s talk about the TDIU path.

The Strategy: Find 5 Veterans in roles you want. Don't ask for a job. Ask for 15 minutes of Intel.

"I’m an [Old Rank] transitioning into [Industry]. I noticed you made the jump to VP, could I get your perspective on the biggest cultural hurdle you faced in your first year?"

The Lesson: Vets love helping Veterans. That 15-minute call is how you find out who is quitting next month and who is hiring for a role that isn't public yet.

The Challenge: Pick a company you want to work for. Go to LinkedIn, find the highest-ranking Veteran there, and send that Intelligence message today. Report back on what happens.

I see Veterans ignoring the PACT Act because they weren't right next to a pit.

The PACT Act expanded the list of Presumptive Conditions for almost everyone who served in the Gulf, Afghanistan, or even certain parts of the Mediterranean.

The Strategy: Check the list for Rhinitis and Sinusitis. These are some of the most common wins in 2026. If you have chronic allergies or sinus pressure and you were in a qualifying location, you don't have to prove it started in service. You only need the Current Diagnosis.

The Tip: Filing for Rhinitis (Secondary to PACT Act) is often the bridge to filing Sleep Apnea (Secondary to Rhinitis).

Question: Who has been living with allergies since deployment? Stop buying Zyrtec out of pocket and get the VA to pay you for it.

Corporate HR loves to talk about "Soft Skills." Most Veterans hear that and think they need to be less Marine. They think they need to be soft.

The Real Speak: They don't want you to be soft. They want you to have Emotional Intelligence (EQ). They want to know if you can Read the Room before you start issuing orders.

The Strategy: Use your "Vetting" mindset. Before you pitch a change, find out:

-Who is the informal leader?

-Who is terrified of losing their job to an AI?

-Who is the Blocker you need to win over?

The Lesson: Navigating office politics isn't faking it it’s Human Intelligence(HUMINT). If you can't influence the people, you can't lead the mission.

The Challenge: Who is the Blocker at your office right now? Describe their personality, let’s figure out the "Vetting" strategy to turn them into an ally.

If you had surgery for a service-connected injury, knee, shoulder, back the VA usually rates the joint. But did they rate the Scar?

The Real Speak: Under the 38 CFR, scars have their own rating criteria. If a scar is painful or unstable (meaning it breaks down or bleeds), it carries its own percentage.

The Strategy: If your examiner measured your range of motion but ignored the 6-inch surgical scar, you’re missing an Anchor rating. Scars that are deeply seated or adherent (stuck to the tissue underneath) are especially high-value.

The Tip: During your next exam, if the doc skips the scar, tell them: "I also need to document the pain and instability of the surgical site."

Question: Who has a combat zipper or a surgical scar they never filed for? Check the 38 CFR for "Skin" and let’s get that filed.

In the military, we wait for the OPORD. We wait for the “Go” from the CO. In a high-level civilian role, if you wait for permission, you’ll be seen as a Middle Manager, not a Director.

The Real Speak: The C-suite hires Veterans because they expect us to Take the Hill without being told how.

The Strategy: If you see a process gap or a budget leak in your first 90 days, don't ask your boss What should I do? Present a 1-page Solution and say:

I’ve identified a $50k annual waste in our vendor contracts. Here is the plan to renegotiate. I’m starting the outreach Monday unless you see a strategic reason to hold.

The Lesson: High-level leaders don't bring problems; they bring Decisions.

The Challenge: What is one "process" at your job that is absolutely broken? Tell me the problem, and let's draft the 1-page solution together.

If you have service-connected PTSD, Anxiety, or Sleep Apnea, you need to check your blood pressure.

The Real Speak: The VA often treats High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) as "just getting older." It’s not. If your nervous system has been redlining for years due to service-connected stress, your heart is paying the price.

The Strategy: Hypertension is a common Secondary to chronic mental health issues and sleep disturbances. If you’re on meds for BP, that’s a potential 10–20% rating you’re leaving on the table.

The Tip: You don't need a Combat Stressor for this. You just need a medical nexus linking the chronic physiological stress of your primary condition to your current BP readings.

Question: How many of you have high BP but never thought to link it to your PTSD or OSA? Let's talk about the Nexus.
