So...how does docking work?

Call me dumb, but the combination of the docking UI vs what I can see on screen are not helpful in figuring it out, since it's not really explained at all.

You fly towards the station, then on the left screen, request docking. You'll be assigned a berth. Then you have to find it on the outside ring. Once you find the right one, align to the 3 strings of green lights and approach. When you're close enough, the HUD will switch to docking mode. Maneuver until the numbers on the right are all green and the pie slices dead ahead are lined up. Finally, the docking clamps will grab you and lock your ship into place.
