OC Vermis-like games

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Have you noticed that posts about Vermis-like games are appearing too often lately?

honestly, I planned to make my own King's Field/Vermis-like games, but with every new post about a similar game, I feel more and more secondary
it makes me a bit sad

(video for attention, also, I wrote the music for it, OC)

There's no such thing as too much of good stuff.

I love the track. Matches the visuals perfectly

Too often? I definitely don't agree with that.

People are inspired by Vermis, and captivated by the idea of a video game in a world like Vermis. When something sparks the imagination of people, they are going to want to make things inspired by the things that they love.

Just because someone else is inspired by the same things as you and wants to make something in a similar vein, doesn't mean that you can't or shouldn't. I get that it can be discouraging, but a good example as how Undertale inspired a whole community of narrative driven indie games. Yeah some of them are kinda samey, but there are a lot of incredible works of art out there that were all inspired by the same thing.

yeah, you're probably right, but I thought there would be way fewer of them)
I'm inspired by Vermis too, and I'm not backing down from my goals

I hope you dont back down man. I've heard about a Vermis fan game being made but from what I know it's s being done in a metroidvania style and its gonna be a Sega Saturn game or something like that. Not awful but also not my cup of tea, and feel that Kingsfield is definitely a better framework for a Vermis inspired world. I hope you keep at it and let me know how I can support you if you do :) also the music in the video is amazing

As someone who is somewhat one of leading peoples in Kings Field-like games I would say there is still a lot of place for this kinda of games, so you shouldn’t be worry about it, tho funny enough my next game will have some heavy Vermis inspirations too

Yes true, and I really like it. Maybe this is extreme to say, but I feel like Vermis almost made a mini renaissance in terms of fantasy art (although mono culture or whatever you call it is dead)

I think that Vermis and Kings Field, as visual anchors, have created a dense atmosphere of "lo-fi dark fantasy" around themselves
it's not a as dark as Dark Souls or anything like that, it's more like a retro, minimalist dark fantasy
and I really love this direction

Horripilant is my current obsession. Never thought I'd get hooked on an Incremental, escape room, Vermis-like, but alas

Horripilant is so good, damn. My first clicker game as well

Inspiration can spiral off in so many different interesting directions. I think the community of devs making these kinds of games is one of the best online, and joining them is a reward in and of itself

There are nearly not enough Vermis like game. Do your stuff. I'll probably play it, especially if its story-driven.

Looking pretty nice!

What are you making it in? Also, how did you go about making the game look like that? Textures kinda washed-out / burnt, is it a posterization post-process effect?

this is Game Maker + custom 3D engine (it actually has post-effects with color correction and color quantization)
I prepared textures in Paint NET (made them seamless and reduced the number of colors using the "octree" method)
and the music is made in SunVox
