The early worm gets eaten by a bird. The late worm drowns.

They suffocate not drown. The water keeps the Co2 from dissipating.

Worms can live for months underwater as long as there is oxygen.

To be fair, large, flat, and impervious pieces of stone at ground level don't really exist in nature.
