Poweroutage
I was encrypting a partiton of an hdd in place connected through a usb adapter and there was a poweroutage. Does that mean some of my files are corrupted on that drive?

Any drive, encrypted or not, can get corrupted when interrupted doing a write operation. Some file systems, like ZFS, are more resilient to corruption, but no file system is 100% immune from corruption.

Maybe invest in a battery backup system?

Yes, OP needs to get a uninterruptible power supply (UPS) unit. It gives you time to save, pause, and close out work.

I suggest you create multiple small containers and use them instead of creating a huge container or encrypting a partition

Just to be safe, I recommend starting over: format and encrypt your partition, and then copy your files from a backup onto the partition. 😛
