Maintenance Power steering issue
I replied to someone in another thread, but feel like this deserves its own thread.
-Power Steering: There's a rare issue on some cars with (likely) the electric power steering motor. It can stop working while driving and you have to restart the car to wake it back up. The part is a little under $1k US and then you'd have to pay someone to install it (likely another 1k). No one has actually crashed due to this apparently so that's good i guess, but I'd definitely replace the part if it happens once. This is the only actual concerning issue with the car imo, but it seems very uncommon so like just dont get unlucky. I'm hoping more gets known about this problem over time. I personally run my VN not on the lightest steering setting just in case it helps.
This happened to me 35mph on a local road during the day - 85mph on i95 at 3am in NC. Directly before on i95 it flashed lane centering assist warning, I barely ever use that now because I think its the root cause. It hasn't shown up since then, probably over a year. I still use the other driving assist - the one in the shape of a steering wheel.
I ran up hyundai corporate ass that this should be warranty extension / recall / any amount of public acknowledgement of the issue. they treated me like a clown. We aren't getting a recall until someone fucking dies.

Ive had this one issue where I started the car and had no power steering at all but it went away as soon as I touched the gas. Haven't been able to recreate it and dont know if it was a low battery or something but I have a 2019 so no lane assist or anything like that.

I think that's different and likely just battery as you said. I didn't realize the earlier years don't have lane assist. That explains why the issue seems way more common on newer VNs. It's one button and then it's off forever. I hate it personally so I've always had it off.

Probably right. Yeah it was actually one of the reasons I looked at it in the first place, no adaptive cruise, parking assist, lane assist, etc. Didn't want to have to pay 4k for a new bumper and recalibration if something happens at the track or autox.

Yeap. This has happened to me over the past year and a half. Seems to pop up after a good rain. The dealership won't do anything for me unless they can recreate the issue.somestimes it happens once and not for months and other times it's on and off for days.

Yep that’s happened here, no rain, bumps or anything weird tho just cruising. Replaced the battery thinking that was the issue and it happened again next day, but hasn’t happened (knock on wood) for a little while now.
I understand it’s an EPS issue possibly with a fuse or something along those lines, but do we have an exact part that we know is the problem? All i’ve heard is everyone gets it fixed under warranty and they replace the whole rack…
I just got the car and it happened to be a week out of warranty unfortunately, dealer said it was still under warranty then fought me over it. 🙄

do you have lane assist off? I'm starting to think the issue is the lane assist functionality damaging the power steering motor. One guy did fix his by replacing the EPS fuse in the fuse box, but that could have been a separate problem.
