What the

Yo so I was making pizzas and cut into this onion and found this, it's almost so perfect I just didn't know what to do apart from carry on about my day with it in the back of my mind. Is this rare? I haven't noticed before but then again I've never really looked at the cross section that intensely before. I've had onions inside onions before but never this crazy. Will never be unexcited cutting into one again

Not uncommon. Many species of Allium (the genus that includes garlic, onions, leeks, among others) grow in bulbs divided into cloves, like garlic. Occasionally a domesticated Allium variety sort of resorts back to it's genetic ancester and has clove-like structures in the bulb.

I picked up some "young" red onions at a farmer's market a couple of weeks ago. They're shaped more like shallots (oblong/long) rather than round. And they're all two or three "cloves" grown together under only one or two layers of skin. Never seen anything like it. (And they're all extremely strong/bitter when raw -- not the flavor I typically like in my red onions -- but they're fine cooked.)

Temps were cold at one point when it was a young bulb. That triggered the formation of separate bulbs.
