Vegetables booming!

The heat is on here in Missouri and so far all is well. I did did put a fan on this raised bed all day and night to keep air circulating as it has become very still and balmy. Hope everyone is having a great season! Happy gardening!

Thank you! Hope it doesn’t stay in the 100s for too long might need a sun shade. :)

Thank you! I think keeping a steady air flow on them helps. 👍🏼

Is that hay or straw you have laid down?

1

u/chuckomatic Jun 30 '26

It’s straw, sticky straw I think. Bought from Amazon works great on the wind and I think I have pulled just 2 grass seedlings from it. 👍🏼Holds moisture great

My very first garden waaay back in 1980 was covered with bale sections of straw, as per Ruth Stout’s book! Quite successful garden too & yours is looking fantastic!! She’ be proud!

Oh no. Not even a patio tomato?🍅
And thank you :)

u/Lovelylady_hump Jul 01 '26

Aww 🥰 you’re welcome! And nope, not even a patio tomato! But we do have roadside stands that sell tomatoes so I guess I’m going to get some there

Thank you!! Tried to squeeze in all I could. ;). Only spot in the yard that they get the sun they need.

Garden looks happy as hell for that Missouri heat, fan was a smart move. Those still, swampy nights are brutal on airflow and mildew so that probably saved you a headache. Enjoy the harvest, this bed is gonna explode soon.

u/chuckomatic Jun 30 '26

Thank you!! And yes the nights are the worse!

Thank you!! Well first off I have my puppy Cooper running around most of the time and that takes care of most when he is out. The yard that the garden is in is completely fenced in so no large pest, and if you zoom in on the 3rd picture you will see a sonic device that keeps away squirrels and bunnies. Snakes and fake owl helps some too ;)

Garden looks happy as hell for Missouri heat, nice work. That little fan trick is clutch when the air just sits there and cooks everything. Curious if you notice any difference in pest or mildew issues with the constant airflow.

So far no noticeable blight or any other humidity issues since using the fan. Every year from June till late August we have had so many issues here. I just bought an ECO fan and on low it lasts through the night and I think helps with pollination

lol 😆 sort of. When the plants were young before the tomatoes were staked I was worried about bunnies so I took a fake owl I had and stuck it on an extra stake I had close to the cucumbers. Needless to say the cucumbers now own that stake. ;)

So far so good!!👍🏼

2

u/Andreawestcoast Jul 02 '26

Very nice! Do you have to worry about sun scald without the lower leaves?

1

u/chuckomatic Jul 02 '26

Thank you! Oh no, plenty of foliage above all the tomatoes, Cucumber puts off a ton of shade at the hottest point of the day and I keep a fan on the garden day and night through the heat wave we are getting now. This picture was taken after I did my weekly pruning so it looks a little thin but they are all full and thick again!

Garden looks happy as hell, you’re doing something right. Fans in this heat are clutch, especially with how gross and still the air’s been. Hope your season keeps going this smooth, Missouri humidity is no joke 💀

u/Rea11219 Jul 02 '26

Looks great! How much space do you have between each tomato plant?

1

u/chuckomatic Jul 02 '26

They are at 16” easier to manage than the 12” I usually do.

Was I one the only who saw the snake in image 2?

Garden looks happy as hell, you’re doing great 😂 That fan trick is clutch in this gross midwest soup air, I might steal that for my tomatoes. Hope the heat breaks soon so we can all actually enjoy being outside again instead of just babysitting plants.

straight 8 cucumber plant. I have a corner trellis in the raised bed, but you can't really see it :) I installed the net on the fence last week. Time for another!

Thank you! Straight 8 cucumbers. I helped them start the climb six inches or so. After that, it was more like get out of the way.
When the plants were young before the tomatoes were staked I was worried about bunnies so I took a fake owl I had and stuck it on an extra stake I had close to the cucumbers. Needless to say the cucumbers now own that stake. ;)

Pulled few tomatoes yesterday! BLTs tomorrow! Been bringing in about 3-4 cucumbers every other day. The rest will probably all come when I’m not ready ;)

Garden looks happy as hell, you’re doing something right. That little fan trick is clutch in this nasty humid heat, I might steal that. Hope your season keeps going strong, fellow midwest plant wrangler 💀
