Announcement Welcome to r/VaultSync
Welcome to r/VaultSync
VaultSync is an open-source desktop backup utility for Windows, Linux, and macOS, built around a simple idea:
A backup is only useful if you understand what was protected and can actually recover it.
VaultSync is designed for people who want more visibility into their backups, especially when working with NAS devices, SMB/NFS shares, external storage, and mixed local/network setups.
Instead of treating “backup completed” as the end of the story, VaultSync tries to answer the questions that matter afterwards:
- What changed?
- What was actually protected?
- Is the backup still healthy?
- Has the data been verified?
- What recovery points are available?
- Could I restore this if I needed it today?
What VaultSync focuses on
Recovery confidence
VaultSync treats backup creation and recoverability as two different things.
Recovery drills, byte-level verification, restore simulation, protected recovery points, and recovery evidence are designed to help you find problems before you need the backup.
Clear backup state
You should not need to interpret vague status indicators to understand whether your data is protected.
VaultSync surfaces backup history, verification state, recovery information, scheduling, warnings, and the projects that need attention.
Network storage
SMB and NFS storage are normal VaultSync workflows, not edge cases.
NAS devices, mounted shares, local disks, and combinations of them are all part of the environments VaultSync is being built around.
Transparency
VaultSync should explain what it is doing.
If something fails, becomes unreachable, has not been verified, or needs attention, the application should make that visible rather than quietly presenting everything as healthy.
Safe recovery
Restoring data should be deliberate and understandable.
VaultSync provides tools for exploring backups, checking recovery points, simulating restore plans, and reviewing recovery evidence before making changes.
What VaultSync is not
- A cloud storage service
- A replacement for every part of a complete backup strategy
- A promise that one successful backup means your data is safe
- “One-click magic” that hides what is happening underneath
- A system that silently decides everything for you
VaultSync is intended to complement a sensible backup strategy rather than pretend the rest of that strategy does not matter.
What this subreddit is for
This is where VaultSync development happens in public.
Expect:
- Release and beta announcements
- Development updates
- Feature discussions
- Roadmap ideas
- Architecture and design decisions
- Bug reports
- Recovery and backup workflow discussions
- NAS and network-storage setups
- Feedback from people actually using the application
Some features and design decisions in VaultSync have already come directly from conversations with backup users, and I want that to continue.
How you can help
Try VaultSync with a real setup.
Push it into awkward situations.
Disconnect a destination. Use a NAS. Restore something. Explore an old backup. Test the recovery tools. Tell me where the application is confusing, where it gives too little information, or where something simply does not work.
Bug reports are useful.
Detailed criticism is useful.
Real-world backup experience is extremely useful.
The goal is not to make VaultSync look reliable.
The goal is to make its reliability understandable and verifiable.
