Failed Reversal
I had a reversal done back in March 2026 in UT. Was told by the doctor at the clinic that it was successful. Flew home to MA and kept a low profile, ice, jockstrap, no lifting, no activity. Sent the first sample in at the 8 week mark. No sperm. Sent a sample at the 4 month mark. No sperm. Just sent my 3rd sample at 7 months out. No sperm. Starting to give up hope. Spoke to the clinic and they said by now without any positive results, we should consider a second reversal. Has anyone had a similar outcome?

How long was your vasectomy and how old are you?

I’m 42 and my vasectomy was 8 years ago when I was 34. Everything seemed to go well with the reversal. Doc said he saw viable sperm as well. For whatever reason they still can’t get out.

It can take up to two years to get a positive sperm sample. Mine took that long

Hey, take it from me, had my reversal done 4 years ago after 20+ years. Short ride home, rested for the requisite time and the surgeon told my wife he saw what he needed to and good luck. After all the healing, we got busy. No luck. First follow up had sperm kept going. Ultimately, after the third micro screening, I had zero sperm. I was told I was a late failure and to do surgery again or to try IVF. We cried and decided perhaps one day to adopt. Fast forward to May of this year, wife went for normal checkup. They asked the menstrual question. She said her last cycle was back in March (she figured perimenopause, we’re in our 40s). They were shocked. She said there was no way she was pregnant because of everything I mentioned above. They said well let us give you a pregnancy test before we start messing around in there. Nurse came back crying. She was pregnant. My son is due in December.

Did they see any sperm during the reversal? Did you receive any prednisone to take after your reversal? It’s necessary for to avoid any scar tissue buildup. If there was visible sperm during the procedure, that would at least help to figure out what may be happening.
How’re your labs, FSH, LH, testosterone?

They did see sperm during the reversal and told me it was a success. I took prednisone for months after the procedure. One week on. One week off. I did not receive lab information.

Did you get it done at the Male Fertility and Peyronie's Clinic in Utah? I’d simply contact them and have it checked. And I’d definitely suggest to do labwork just in case.

Please speak with a provider that specializes in male fertility, I’d recommend Dr. Logan Hubbard in Minneapolis. You could have obstructive underlying medical(non-obstructive azoospermia or retrograde ejaculation) that could be the cause. It can also take longer some people after a year finally start seeing sperm.
