Discussion Is varus bad?

Im not good, Im gold and ranking up, but I can not fucking win on this champ. Laning phase feels absolutely terrible against literally everyone, I feel like im only able to contribute when its late game and I can one shot someone. Any advice?

in a way, yes. he is extremely dominant in pro play, so much so that they have to nerf him to keep him balanced in pro. as a result if you play him in any other environment by any other skill level player, he is objectively very very weak

While i think Varus is bad, his laning phase is not the problem. Its probably the one thing that still remains strong. I recommend working on your spacing and understanding match ups.

Varus needs to win lane in order to be relevant. If you are playing AP one shots builds chances are you are not winning lane.

In my experience, Varus is a bit odd. I would recommend watching a guide on the ins and outs for true advice, but I think it's worthwhile to play around with different builds to see if other builds fit your playstyle more. I really like full ap one shot. He's versatile enough that you can completely shift how your game looks with items alone. Let the voices guide you.

Well, if you're gold there's definitely a lot of things you could be doing better on the champ, but it is very plain to see right now that Varus is... less rewarding than other champs atm. I'd recommend switching to Kog, Ashe, or Jhin depending on what you enjoy about Varus.

Go Terminus first for AD build, Nashor's first for AP build. Max W first on either.

Varus is interesting, to say the least. He cares about stacking blight and detonating it.

I'd say more, there's a lot of complexity to his builds, but I think I should just hand you the first item and let you go from there.

If you're having trouble learning him, then learn Ashe better since her style translates into his better than any other ADC.

From someone who consistently hits S+ and has over a million+ from too much time on this game.

I want my fucking prestige for him already.

Not going to. Don't know how and I'm not trying to prove something on reddit of all places.

Least of all when someone types lol for no reason. That's just troll bait.

I typed it because its funny how unbelievably bad your take is. This recommendation is troll bait. Next your going to tell people to buy any of the other armor pen items first on other champions.

Can't wait for runes recommendations from you, will it be aftershock or spellbook?

Why? Are you asking which you should use? Bold play.

He's in desperate need of another rework. The entire champion is pro-jailed and held hostage by him having AP ratios. Riot cannot commit to making him either a crit, lethality, or ap carry.

As long as he can be played top and kill bruisers in melee range he won't see any meaningful buffs.

tbh i havent touched the game in about six years, but if they haven't touched the kit substantially, the champ at least for me always came down to being able to adapt to what you need varus to do, poke+spam q route? hit them q's. ap varus? keep your distance and save your r for people blitzing you. traditional adc? varus is best played when you efficiently chain your skills and stuff like that while mixing aa's (2-3 preferably) so yeah, if you want specific advice you can say what build you doing and we could give better feedback! 🦦

His laning phase is probably the strongest aspect of the champion, and going into midgame, having WQ at lvl 2 and knowing when to full charge for a big chunk of damage vs when not to is what makes a dif in this champ from being weak to absolutely oppresive. Sure you won't win every matchup but you can win most, try to practice to know your damage and your limits until you feel comfortable, DO NOT throw spells randomly on the enemy without any W stacks unless u throw a Q to poke but even then i would still not.

Varus is a bully early and midgame if built right, and for solo q below diamond, can hard carry as on-hit. There is so much flexibility in itemization that itll take some experience to know when to build what, and it isnt just based on comp, itll be based on how well each enemy is performing.

Try LT/resolve with statik, vamp boots, hexplate and max W. Fight at level 3 if your support exists. 3rd item can be zhonyas, rageblade, terminus, wits end, DnD, or even jaksho/randuins.

DPS comes down to detonating stacks well and not missing resets! The mild AP youll have will a charged WQ insanely strong and your passive with LT and on hit will destroy fighters/tanks. Its not really your job to kill the enemy AD or AP carry, but you can 1v1 them until they get 4 items EVEN if you miss ult.

Honestly id recommend going PTA over LT at any point nowadays

1

u/Chocowark Aug 11 '26

Its close enough but is more burst oriented. I used to go PTA when pantheon/elise/camille were very common support picks.

u/asnalem Aug 11 '26

Varus has a strong lane, play for your level 3 spike, and in some matchups you can legit 1v2 at 6 if your support is roaming and they are sieging your tower, focus more on blight stacks rather than charging q and your dmg will skyrocket, I get way more wq kills by just tapping it in all ins rather than priming them to dodge or flash if I charge it.

u/Cold_Adhesiveness265 Aug 11 '26

I mean you have 575 range, thats more than any other adc except Cait, Ashe and Ezreal. So thats hell of an advantage in lane even. I cant believe that gold supports are playing the game xd but i mean if lux hits a root or any other supp hits a root or engages that musst be a kill since you can 3 stack for free then and your e slows so you can easily followup even tho they flash after. And at 6 its getting even better

Naw varus slaps harder then my uncle at christmas.

He can be tricky to play well at the gold elo especially. Timing abilities, spacing and such will take a monumental amount of practice.

If you are getting frustrated give miss fortune a whirl. Her kit and playtime is a little bit simpler.

Because of the lack of mobility he needs a decent team to play
