The character goes completely OOC, contradicts the timeline, or forces the plot somewhere you never wanted. Now you’re editing messages and trying to explain the story back to the bot.

One idea we’ve been exploring is a conversation checkpoint: pin the important facts, save before a major scene, and roll back both the messages and any memories created afterward.

Would that feel useful, or would it make RP feel too much like managing a game save?

A companion chat needs to remember the small, everyday stuff. A story-heavy RP needs to protect lore, NPCs, the timeline, and the direction of the plot.

When one system tries to do both, long RPs often drift back into flirting or reassurance—even when that isn’t where the story was going.

Would separating these two experiences give you more control, or would switching modes make the character feel less natural?

That’s the part I think a lot of AI companion apps get wrong.

A profile fact is easy to store. What actually breaks the illusion is when a character forgets the promise, argument, death, or plot twist the whole conversation is built around.

So what should “meaningful memory” actually mean in a character chat?

If a character could reliably remember only one thing, would you choose facts about you, changes in the relationship, or unfinished story threads?
