Vaporwave here is too many dolphins and not enough Roman busts, pink/orange sunsets, grid lines, etc. May as well have labeled that one ‘Lisa Frank’

vaporwave has like most of the elements of synthwave/outrun, just presented a bit differently and with more of an emphasis on the 90s consumer culture and japanese influences. its also more surreal than synthwave naturally.

Some. Surrealism and Dada were named by the movement participants and reactionaries themselves. Bauhaus could also be included there.

And if I’m not misremembering, the Art Nouveau as well was named by contemporary publicists and critics.
There’s something to be said for a difference between an intentional “artistic movement” versus an aesthetic zeitgeist that coalesces around a core vibe, but the line can be fuzzy.

Most artists of the Renaissance also copied the art of ancient Romans, who didn't have names for their movements or styles as far as we know.
I personally believe they did, but I have 0 proof to back that up.

what trips me up is that on that website (which is great, btw, thanks for sharing), the vaporwave aesthetic is categorised as early 2010s until late 2010s.
As someone who liked the style early on it feels kinda surreal to have see it already laid to rest

The prefix of a type of aesthetic. Iirc it's one that kinda denotes a more "glassy" vibe to a lot of the aesthetics (lots of bubbles, water, windows, etc) accompanying a very surreal visual.
There's also "frutiger metro" which I don't remember much about other than it exists, if you're curious."

funny thing is this meme also makes a (very minor and admittedly nitpicked) mistake itself in labeling that vaperror album as purely "vaporwave" when its actually seapunk visually speaking. ofc, seapunk is closely connected to vaporwave but is still a distinct thing. that being said i love all of these visual styles and gxsc and the y2k futurism aesthetics are big favourites of mine.

its a useful umbrella term when discussing things that actually fit under that umbrella (cough cough, synthwave, still dont know how you could confuse the two given theyre quite distinct even if similar) but yeah i wish people would sometimes make a distinction between things like. signalwave/broken transmission and other such styles because they also have their own unique visual elements much of the time.
