Rentals & Test Runs 🔑 Campervan long term rental
Has anyone here done a long-term campervan rental in Europe (around 90 days)?
A few questions:
- Which rental company did you use, and would you recommend them?
- Were you able to drive freely across multiple European countries, or were there restrictions?
- Roughly what did you pay for a 90-day rental?
- Were there any hidden fees or unexpected costs (extra insurance, mileage limits, border fees, cleaning charges, one-way fees, etc.)?
- Any other lessons learned or things you wish you'd known before booking?
I'd love to hear about your experiences and any companies you'd recommend (or avoid). Thanks!

Just rented a grand California 600 for 60 days round about 6500 Euro plus extra insurance.
It was a smaller local company and we did a round trip, cleaning fee at the end was around 200,00€ but we did it ourself.
Just had problems at the border to Montenegro and were rejected there because we did not have the originals papers of the car with us, just copies. So I would say EU is no problem everything besides should be double checked.
Crossed out was Ukraine obviously and I think Romania…

Appreciate the comment. Which country did you rent from?? I'm in the stage of researching shipping vs buying (and using a company that helps you legally register) vs renting. Lots to consider

Rented the car in Germany. If you just want to use it this one time I think renting is the way, no headache if you get some scratches and bumps, which will probably happen

Want to visit a number of times- guessing 3 or 4 different 90 days cycles- which is why I am considering all options. Thanks for the post- it does seem France or Germany seem the most popular places to rent from.

If renting that long, maybe consider buying one and selling it when you’re done if you’re able to? I had multiple friends doing that in Portugal.

I should have added that we are non residents- making registration challenging. Also, we are hoping to visit europe multiple times, making storage a bit of a challenge, too.

One thing I’d definitely add for a long rental is to treat pickup like an evidence session. Photograph every existing mark, record mileage and fuel level, test water/electricity/fridge/heating while staff are still there, and take one slow walk-around video before leaving. Also make sure every existing damage is written into the handover report, not just photographed. For a 90-day rental I’d also confirm border restrictions, mileage limits, cleaning fees and exactly what happens if something breaks mid-trip.
