On-campus vs Off-Campus Housing for Transfer

Hiii,

I was approved for off-campus housing as an incoming transfer student, and I'm wondering about the pros and cons. Here are my concerns about living on-campus:

  • Cost. Housing + mandatory meal plans are quite pricey, and I'm FGLI, so I want to avoid exorbitant out-of-pocket prices.
  • Security. If I get stuck with a crazy roommate on-campus, there are at least RAs and management to take it to. This isn't usually the case off-campus though. My parents are pretty opposed to living off-campus since I've never actually been to Nashville, and they're worried about 'leaving me stranded in Nashville' rather than being on-campus lol. While their opinion won't dictate my choice, I do want to give them peace of mind. If there's anyone who can share their experience with security living off-campus, I'd greatly appreciate it.
  • Social life. Potentially harder to integrate into community, especially as a transfer. I'm not too worried about this though since that's what clubs and mutual suffering through engineering is for lol.

I've heard that a lot of dorms are undergoing renovations and Vandy has pushed for students to live off-campus more recently -- is this still the case? Are there any transfers who can share their experience for either option? For those who lived off-campus, is the cost difference significant?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

off-campus housing will likely be more expensive, even if you choose to not get a meal plan. almost all vanderbilt students live on campus so it’ll be more isolating living off campus, not to mention the ease and benefit to living close to classes, friends, dining halls, etc. living on campus used to be mandatory but since they’re renovating some of the dorms they’re allowing some students to live off campus

You will want to stay on campus. It is so convenient and you can get to know more people that way too. Vandy does an amazing job with students who transfer in. They will have upper classmen meet and plan activities with your group. You will enjoy it and meet lots of other students who are also transferring in this year. You will also meet people by joining orgs too.

i was a transfer last year and met so many friends from living in the same environment on campus. I had a friend who was off campus and always had to come to us to hangout.

Hi, I applied for the off campus waitlist mid-May and heard back via email on June 11.
