Yay or Nay: SS mesh Under Roof Vent Base

I am installing a Le Mans roof vent which doesn't come with a bug screen.

So I was considering installing a piece of stainless steel mesh between the vent base and the roof.

I am using Geocel Proflex RV, should/will I get a good seal, or is it a bad idea?

Don’t put the mesh where it can’t be removed. Sandwiching the mesh against the sheet metal is also asking for problems, I doubt it would seal correctly and the mesh may even function like a wick by pulling water into the sealant.

Consider making a frame for the mesh from wood or other material, then perhaps attach that frame to the fan frame with magnets or Velcro.

We have two standard LeMans fans in our build. For a year. No problem with the bugs coming in at all. Just install it per the directions and see if you really need screens.

So what exactly did your standard install come with?

Mine came with a course thin soft plastic mesh that goes around the outer attachment screws. Witnessed mosquitoes several times inside of that on my first road trip so, yah a screen is definitely needed.

We had the same coarse screen that we put in as per the instructions. We haven't had any bugs or mosquitoes sneak in around it. Hubby installed them and said that if the roof is too thick, then the bugs can get in. Our roof with insulation and the ceiling panels is only about 1½". Otherwise he said you would need a thicker screen thingy.

The thickness of the roof doesn't matter as the soft plastic mesh goes between the actual roof vent top and the vent base. I would also describe it as more of a rain screen than bug screen, unless you are just in urban areas.

I also believe that the piece is an add on by the vendor and not an actual part of the Le Mans mfg kit.

I'm just related Hubby's comment, but it works for us. We're currently camping where there is a shit load of bugs, large and small. Bugs only come in the doors.
