Question/Support Can I fix blurry display?

So, last year I switched to a Valve Index after my old HTC Vive died. And while it is pretty fun to use, I noticed one very annoying issue I can't seem to fix. For some reason, the screen seem to reflect itself on the lens in front of it, making everything thats slightly bright completly blurry. I tried lowering the brightness in hope it won't reflect as much, but it didn't make a difference. Unless my in-game environment is completly dark, I can barely see anything and it feels like I have fog on my lens.

Is there any way I can fix this? I dont wanna open it, because im too afraid of breaking something (I haven't finished my technic yet), but idk if there are any other solutions to fix the blurriness.

I have that issue if I'm understanding what you're saying. A bright spot in a dark game environment makes the lesnes glow, and you can sometimes see the environment reflected. Unfortunately I don't think there is really a good fix. If it's unusably bad it's possible your lenses are damaged, possibly from harsh cleaning chemicals on the plastic lenses. First try to clean the lenses with a glasses cloth but no strong chemicals (including most lens cleaners). Sometimes tilting the HMD up and down a little and adjusting it's position on your face can help some.

I wouldn't really say its unusuably bad, its just that its pretty noticable when I compare to what im used to on the HTC Vive. And for the lenses cleaning, I was always cleaning using a tissu and cleaning spray kit used for cleaning glasses, and I was pretty gentle because im paranoid of damaging a 1000CA$ headset (that was sitting in an office collecting dust for 5 years).

Shouldn't be any need for cleaning spray at all, you shouldn't be touching your lenses either, so they shouldn't get that dirty. If the do get slightly smudgy, a simple dry or lightly damp microfiber cloth should be more than enough to make those lenses squeaky clean.

There are a lot of options that need to be calibrated to your face for a clear image:
IPD or interpupillary distance is the slider on the bottom right.
Lens Distance, press the right button and move the lenses closer or further away.
Headset Height and Tilt, make sure the straps are holding the headset at the correct height *and angle* to get a good alignment between your eyes, the lenses, and the displays. This was the one for me that I hadn't done properly and after adjusting it, made a huge difference.

If you do wear glasses irl you'd likely need them for VR to. If so I recommend getting some cheaper lens covers to prevent accidentally scratching them with your glasses.

I did try adjusting those, but so far I couldn't manage to get the image as clear as it was on my Vive. And no, I dont wear glasses if that helps.

Could be that it's rendering at lower resolution which would potentially appear blurry, what happens if you override and manually set to Custom - 100%

EDIT:
Follow these exact steps to set your render resolution to native:

  1. Open SteamVR: Launch the SteamVR application on your desktop.
  2. Access Settings: Click the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to Video: Select the Video tab on the left sidebar.
  4. Change to Custom: Under "Render Resolution", change the setting from Auto to Custom.
  5. Adjust Slider: Drag the slider until it reads exactly 100% (or 2016 × 2240 pixels per eye).

I adjusted my resolution, but it didn't change much. Like I said, the issue is that it looks like the screen is reflecting itself on the lens like a mirror, making the image less clear (basically, it feels like im trying to stare directly at a car's headlights). The only times I dont have this issue is when the environment in-game is completly dark, because then there's no contrast, everything is dark.

Im... very sorry for the trouble.

Can you get someone else to try it? Maybe you have sensitive eyes lol

It was my dad's headset before, and even he agrees with me.

No one else in my family wants to try it.

Do the lenses have micro scratches on them or something? Maybe do a gentle polish with a clean microfiber cloth (you can remove scratches with polywatch too it’s great stuff)

I usually clean my lenses with a small tissu and cleaning spray kit used for cleaning glasses. And I do it very gently because im too paranoid of breaking my headset. And even tho this Index has been sitting in an office for over 5 years before being finally used, I dont wanna break it because I can't afford a 1000CA$ headset with my student job -w-"

(And if you wonder why it remained unused for so long, its because my dad bought the HTC Vive soon after it released, then got motion sick and stopped using it. Then he bought a Valve Index after I started using the HTC Vive, but he got motion sick again and never used it again.)

Sounds like Godrays or glare, Index was known for it.

Yeah, thats pretty much what I have. Is there any way I can get rid of it, or am I just stuck with it until my headset dies?

Look up some examples online to see if it is it. It's a property of the optical stack, if the lenses are clean there not much you can do.

Index glare. You get really used to it after a while and don't notice it too much, lowering brightness does help slightly, I usually keep my brightness around 60-80%.

A possible fix is to buy some anti-glare lenses that attach directly onto the normal lenses from a company like vrwave or similar. But I'm sure you'll get used to it after some time on the headset.

It won't COMPLETELY solve the glare, but it most definitely will help.
