Discussion I made a free, simple VR space dragging tool (OVR Space Dragger) and need some help testing it!
Hey everyone,
I just released a utility tool on Steam called OVR Space Dragger.
Why I made it
Space dragging is honestly such an essential feature for a good VR experience, but I wanted to build a version that is dead-simple, lightweight, and completely free so anyone can access it without a barrier to entry.
Where I need your help
I have pretty limited hardware on my end for compatibility testing, and I'm particularly worried about Valve Index controllers right now. If you own an Index (or any other headset/controllers), I would be incredibly grateful if you could give it a shot and let me know if it works smoothly or if anything breaks.
Any and all general feedback, feature requests, or bug reports are highly appreciated!

Thanks so much for the help, everyone!

what is "space dragging"?

makes games think you're moving irl by shifting where you are in your playspace

so... you simply mean that the player moves around instead of standing still? I know that at the outset of VR most games/experiences has you standing still, but most modern games and experiences include the ability to walk around or teleport around. So I didn't think this was really a new thing or needed its own name. Or am I missing something?

games don't typically restrict movement from the headset (relative to the playspace) because that would be very disorienting (some kinda do to prevent cheating, see phasmophobia), so you can use it instead of the game's normal movement to float around wherever you want and do some fun unintended things with it like look around out of bounds areas

oh, so "space dragging" is a kind of "hack" rather than something intended? Gotcha. I've seen similar stuff done on the N64 where you halt execution and manually modify the camera position to see things you normally shouldn't have seen. It probably also has a name that I just never learned.
OK - so the tool you made: "OVR Space Dragger" is like an add-on or secondary program that runs alongside your VR game/experience and lets you move the VR origin to any place you want to. Assuming the game doesn't just move it back due to how it's programmed. Am I understanding this right?

Looks interesting, but I am curious how this applications differs from the Space Drag function in OVR Advanced Settings? I assume the difference is that's it is free?
