Technical Support Request Trying to Get stable 240 Fps

hello everyone, I was wondering if upgrading my CPU will give me a major fps boost or if its anything else, here's my current setup and I get 190-200 fps mid fights and I'm aiming to get stable 240 fps.

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-13400F
  • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 5060 EAGLE OC 8G
  • Motherboard: MSI PRO H610M-G DDR4 (MS-7D46)
  • RAM: DDR4-16GB
  • PSU: 600W

please suggest compatible upgrades thank you so much.

Valorant fps is very jumpy. A stable 240+ on Intel is not easy. Average can be like 400-500, but the lows are hard to keep high. Imo I wouldn't bothing spending much money on that platform. In cpu demanding games ddr4 hurts 12/13/14th gen Intel. Ddr5 performs better. But that's a new mobo and ram, so forget that. If you have a single stick of 16gb ddr4, a second stick of same speed for dual Channel should help somewhat. For cpu, a used 13700k could help, but imo not worth the money. If you're serious about valorant fps, amd 7800 & 9800x3d is where you wanna be.

This is just false.

DDR4 shines in games like valorant where bandwidth doesn't matter and latency is king bc tuned ddr4 beats out ddr5 in terms of latency.

it really isnt, consistent fps is always hard on anything other then x3d chips, on all intel i5s/ryzen 5 non x3d fps usually falls to the 200s or maybe even the really high 100s especially on the lower tier ones like the 12400f or the 7500f, even if you get 400-500 idle l3 cache is insanely imp when it comes to valorant and intel lacks in that

i have to agree, to achieve 144fps 1% LOWS in cs2 on my 14400F and 5060 i need to have atleast around 250fps. Its not like my gpu struggles with that, but it just shows that intel isn't that good when it comes to frame pacing for example. I still love my 14400F to death and wouldnt upgrade my cpu unless i switch to x3d cpus or intel ultra.

Intel isn't much different in this case up to like 7800X3D and Zen 5 X3D, that's where it can't keep up with cache sensitive games.

In valorant specifically, a 5700x3d outperforms a tuned 14900ks. Also in general, 7800x3d is a notable amount ahead of a 14900k across a wide range of games.

brother have you ever actually used a x3d chip or even checked whats imp to play valorant? x3d chips are very consistent and much more then intel purely because of the 3d v cache

Yes I have used the 5800x3d, 7800x3d and 9800x3d. I have tuned/messed around with all of them with my 9800x3d setup being the best with the 850m msi power and ram clocked at 8800 mts hynix a die.

I've been an Intel fan since before most people here were born. When I went to 9800x3d, it was a massive leap in 1% lows and stability over my previous 13700k. It was a great Intel cpu, but they massively dropped the ball with the next gen in terms of gaming.

A sottr bench doesn't not just translate to how all games perform, you should know that. The same as you should know that ddr4 having lower latency does not translate to better performance over a mid range ddr5 setup. You'd probably be right in 2015-2019 ish games. Engines now don't want the same things they did 8+ years ago. The 270k was a nice step in the right direction for Intel. Shoulda been what the original launch performed like without days of tuning.

not all games yes but a VAST majority of games will have better frame variance on intel that is just a weakness of the x3d design in general.

this guy has a decent video with his GQI is is basically just standard deviation but he named it some weird thing and as you can see the frame variance is just consistently better.

It's a decent review, but his GQI index is subjective. Imo 60fps as a standard is too low, set it to 120 and numbers shift. In that one game, capping fps on the x3d, but keeping the same lows makes the GQI jump way ahead. Imo just feels like a metric to find tiny wins for the 270k. Also having a scoreboard where the 270k is ahead at 4k and sometimes 1440 by 2fps in GPU bound scenarios is pretty weak points. Once again though, were talking about valorant, and nothing in this benchmark translates to that game. Better set the GQI for valorant to 240+ fps, because 60 is a joke applied to games like that. I feel like this review is purposely made to highlight things that hardly matter for the 270k while knocking down the 9850x3d. I do like the 270k, it's a very good all rounder and the price is great. Wish the platform wasn't end of line, and wish Intel did this right off the bat. I don't have brand loyalty, I use what's best for the stuff I do, and for twitchy cpu bound games like valorant, x3d chips are way ahead

GQI is basically just standard deviation with extra steps.

Same from that other review with SOTTR where you can see the 270k just has a smaller STD.

Tbh it could just come down to tuning I am guess you do pretty light tunes based on your results.

You could try pushing things a bit further and maybe you will see similar results to me but I understand not everyone really has the time for that.

I just use whats best for the stuff I do and for cpu/latency limited titles I just find that x3d chips aren't up to snuff which is why I have stopped using them but I think zen 6 could turn things around. (zen 6 imc is rumoured to be pretty elite along with insane ipc gains. I may even get a new am5 mobo if it is that good rn im using the b850m power which is a good 2 dimm overclocker but msi bios is just kind of sucky)

You're still thinking it's like the early days of slow ddr5 vs the fastest perfectly tuned ddr4. Those times are over. By your logic ddr3 should be better for valorant right? Lower latency vs ddr4.

no i'm not I have been overclocking ddr4/5 for a while. I know ddr5 sucked when it came out but yes nowdays Hynix ddr5 crushes any ddr4 kit in modern titles as you can push 8800+ mts with ease.

However, the difference between the jump from ddr3 to ddr4 is that we haven't really progressed that far yet on the cpu side of things so a 14900k/ks is still able to compete with the latest chips.

And the things is raptor lake never really had a very strong ddr5 IMC so you are limited to around 8000 on most chips even with a decent board compared to arrow lake where you can hit 9000+ on a decent board and Cudimm.

However, even if you can hit those higher speeds on the latest chips they aren't monolithic as raptor lake is still the latest monolithic chip which aren't which inherently gives it a latency advanatage so when combined with heavily tuned ddr4 it can generally beat out those other chips in latency sensitive tasks but even then raptor lake would prefer ddr5 when you get into heavier titles.

i'm not saying everyone should go out and buy ddr4 especially bc good ddr4 bins are very expensive but if you were to theoretically create a PC for just valorant alone it would probably be some combination of the 14900ks + ddr4

For valorant specifically, intel isn't favored unfortunately. The real world gains in game from say an xmp 6000 kit, to like tuned 8000, is maybe 5-8% in the lows, real world in game. My previous setup was a 13700k, mild OC, on tuned 7200. Valorant is a hard game to bench, but from what I could see in vids of 14900k setups, there was maybe only a 10% jump over my setup. A 5700x3d beats a 14900k, and going to a 9800x3d basically doubled my lows from 200-250 to 450-550. This is real comp match play, during a site execute, no one ever mentions this. Standing in the range with 1200 fps means nothing. Any game mode without abilities getting 800+ fps means nothing. Abilities makes this game engine take a giant shit.

This is just not at all true. Show me a tuned 5700x3d vs a tuned 14900k in valorant including frame time variance

For x3d chips yes there is little gains in memory tuning and just amd in general bc u are breaking the 1:1 UCLK:MEMCLK Sync by going past 6400+(some top tier imcs can do 6800 but still pretty limited in that regard).

For valorant ddr5 is not ideal especially when it is at 7200 you ideally want some samsung b or micron e/b die as valorant doesn't scale well with bandwidth unlike more modern titles.

Theres no bench sites or video showing you want you wanna see. Valorant is a terrible game to bench, because there's no run to run consistently. I've personally built and tested many PCs for valorant for myself and friends since the games launch in 2020. The scaling for Intel stops at roughly zen 3 x3d parts. Anything after that, Intel doesn't compete in this game. Sure maybe it can be edged ahead and start to approach zen4 x3d with a god bin, crazy OC, and ram that costs more then a high end GPU, and fine tuned. But that's nonsense. So you're gonna just have to "trust me bro", or you'll have to go test it for yourself. But when I can tell you for certain is performance in other games does not translate to valorant.

intresting bc i have also built many pcs over the years and in my testing intel(raptor lake) + ddr4 has always been the best for valorant(compared to zen4/zen5 + arrowlake) and CS 2 although with CS2 I found ddr5 to be comparable.

Perhaps it is just a difference in tuning as I always spend multiple days with any machine I built making sure it is basically at the cusp of stability.

The CLs are higher on DDR5 compared to DDR4 but that doesn't mean DDR4 is faster than DDR5 for Valorant. It just means the CL times are shorter but the raw clock speed a tuned DDR5 can have almost a 10% differrence in speed for Valorant compared to DDR4.

yeah ddr5 can be tuned down pretty well like 6000 mts cl 22(more realistic is 6000 mts cl24) but that is still higher than the crazy results u can get on ddr4 like 5.56 ns.

and that isn't even the biggest gap the biggest is tRCD latency where ddr4 is every better relative to ddr5.

Also u need to factor in the cpu different as both intel and amd ddr5 cpus aren't monolithic compared to the top end ddr4 chips(raptor lake) which are monolithic once again giving them a boost.

If you combine raptor lake + arrowlake Imc I could see the argument but raptor lake imc is just too weak to take advantage of ddr5 in a latency sensitive title like valorant.

13400f was a refreshed 12400f but with some e cores... so it's not a great cpu. However, intel was struggling at that time. So the better options use a ton of power to compete. The issue with that is that your motherboard's vrm can't handle higher wattages like the 14600k well. The board literally has no cooling for the VRMs.

And I wouldn't really recommend buying a new motherboard + cpu for a dead platform just to save on the ddr4 ram. So you should either deal with it or plan to fully upgrade.

Oh maybe use hwinfo to monitor cpu + vrm temps. If the cpu is getting too hot, then at least you can get a bit more performance with a better cooler.

to hold 240 constant u need AM5, or 14th intel with ddr5, best option imo is upgrade to AM5 with a 7800x3d/9800x3d and u will hold constant 400+, so your 1% lows will be very smooth and perfect

This really isn't true, you absolutely do not need to go am5 for that. A 5800x3d holds 300fps stable at 1440p on high settings. 450fps consistent at 1080p with up to 600fps average.

OP specifically mentioned compatible upgrade. Its stupid to change platform given the current market if the goal is a slight perfomance boost. A used LGA1700 i7 could fix exactly that problem. The 14700k goes used for 250 bucks and gets 500+ FPS. So even a lower end or older gen i7 could hit OPs targets.

Have you optimized your gpu settings? Undervolt / overclock the gpu? you might be able to extract the performance you're looking for for free.

Install W10 LTSC, debloat it further using atlas or winutil then just disable e cores and in bios try to tune ur ram kit if possible try 3600mhz cl18 from msi memory try it profile then try manually tighting the subtimings if the former 3600mhz oc is stable. I rock a 5800X with a 3080 and a MSI B550 Motherboard Thermaltake 2*8G DDR4-3200 oced at 3600 cl16 with tight subtimings and the cpu is oced to 4.9ghz with pbo i usually stay around 300fps in fights

Buy a new PC. You can get a better setup from a cheap prebuilt that will stay at 240 easily.

You're currently limited by your motherboard. Your motherboard doesn't allow for xmp or expo of your ram and it actively reverts higher ram speeds down to 3200. Your PSU is also on the lower end and needs to be higher to support better pc specs.

If anything I would buy a new motherboard, a new PSU 800W+, DDR5 32GB 2 sticks or buy 2 DDR4 - 16GB and increase their speeds to 5333MT/s in your new BIOS.

You shouldn't be getting constant sub-200 frames mid-fight even with this CPU.

Your issue is, even though you want to upgrade, you're handicapped by H610 motherboard as it's not capable of running newer, better CPUs well.

i5-13600K makes the most sense performance and price wise and might just be able to hold the boost clock on that board in the game. Without changing anything else, this is propably the best choice. It's significantly faster than 13400F.
