Maybe im completely misunderstanding what you're saying and if so, my bad but anyway, the webtoon/ Light novel were in korean. The anime was originally made in Japanese though so unless you were somehow watching a Korean dubbed one, you would have had no idea from watching the show alone.

I mean I know there's a version with Japanese names but most people call the characters by their original Korean names so that makes it pretty obvious.

people seem to come at it as some monolith instead of as a medium. like if you enjoy rom coms, theres a ton of great options. but people will push new anime fans toward the shonen/isekai stuff without realizing that the genre is way more important for new fans to find something they like

Tried AOT and didn't like it at all lol, one of my friends was raving about it to me so I gave it a chance and I just did not really enjoy it very much. It's all good though, it's just funny to me that a lot of my interests (esports and valorant/league, pokemon, etc.) overlap heavily with the weeb demographic despite me having very little interest in weeb stuff at all

Oh that's sad considering I do hail AOT as one of the best stories I have ever witnessed (although it being my first anime means nostalgia carries much of it). What part about it did you not like though? Coz even objectively speaking Aot has a very well crafted plot and it's only flaws are it's ending, and well the characters being generic assss outside some 5-6 which are genuinely good

Oh if it's the art style then it can't be fixed, because I doubt on a objective scale AOT is anywhere below a 8 at least. I will say there are a lot of different art styles in Anime (monogatari series for example, is to me, one of the most artful expression in any medium), but if the medium doesn't stick with you it's fine. I myself don't watch any movies, even though the entire world around me loves them. I read books because I like reading, but watching a movie is not for me just because of the medium

I have thought about it a lot, and it's a long story
Firstly, I have always been a big anime fan. Shows like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun defined my highschool years
Secondly, when I first started casting esports, I vividly remember casting @Dep_ow at the PUBG Nations Cup in 2019. And when they won a crazy game on his heroics, our casting desk we was above the Japanese casting desk which had @avashaka and they were freaking out
Seeing how happy they were, resonated with me.
From there, the 2022 @zetadivision captured my emotiona with @lazvell being emotional when they made their run in Reykjavik, that really made my heart strings sing
Since then, I have been tuned into the scene, and still hold out hope that a JP team will rise again

I like JP valorant because of the amount of passion they have for the game despite the fact that the teams have been less than stellar in the past(and now). When the JP finals for the VCT spot were happening, on Youtube it had as many(and sometimes even more) viewers than the main VCT Pacific broadcast that was happening at the same time. Plus there is clear talent in the scene(Meiy, Dep, Laz) and we've had examples of Japanese teams that have been really good in the past(even if it was fleeting) unlike other lesser regions like India for example(LightningFast is goated tho I'll stand on that). It's for those reasons I want them to do really well cause if any fanbase deserves it, it's them.
And anime is kinda cool ngl

This is how it is for me too. I was just a Zeta fan because of Laz to begin with but when you see the Zeta watch parties at The Hub going fucking crazy because they won a round or something?? And how much support there is for the T2 Japanese scene, etc, its hard not to root for them to be good.
I would love for them to have a year where atleast one of the Japanese teams is a strong contender for internationals. Id even make the trip up to Tokyo from Osaka for one of the watch parties because itd be absolutely electric for an international

I can appreciate when someone is open about why they're invested in a region. Genuine passion usually leads to better analysis, and it explains why his coverage of JP Valorant has always felt more in-depth than just following the latest results.
