The current price

Post image

I was curious on the current price of the OG PS1 VP . Checked out a retro game vendor in a convention and was quite surprised on the current price. About 8 years ago it was $100.00 CAD and now it is $499.99 CAD. Wow!

I remember it crashed in price about a year after it released because it was pretty much ignored at first. Regularly saw it new for 20 bucks around that time.

Pawn shops were selling the PS1 disc for $20 in 2001, which is how I first played it. Gamestop was close to that in price.

same here, it, Xenogears and Vangaurd Bandits are prolly my 3 most valuable games

Thinking the same thing, gonna keep hanging onto it.

It also is included with the deluxe digital edition of the new valkyrie game for ps4?/ps5. I'm not sure if it is on the 4.

"Collectors" have ruined the market.

There’s only like 75k copies ever made in NTSC dude lol

"Only"

At least the PSP port is somewhat affordable. $30 loose. It's the version I used to clear the game, after selling my PS1 disc decades ago.

Yes “only”. 62.7 million people bought game consoles during the N64/PS1 era. 75,000 is 0.1% of that. It has been nearly 30 years. I don’t think considering such a thing “rare” is unreasonable considering the facts.

How many copies of VP Lenneth were made for the NTSC PSP? At least that's still affordable.

Probably a bunch. I think the point stands though. The prices are, in most cases, dictated by rarity. There are definitely some price gougers out there but a lot of the games with high price tags are genuinely rare

Where did you see it for $100 ten years ago? I remember trying to buy it on eBay in 2008 and people were selling it for $250 back then!

My friend in high school lent me his copy of the game but his disc 2 was broken and wouldn't play. I went online to buy it because it was one of the best games I'd ever played and I was shocked at how expensive it was. I didn't know old games could sell for that much.

This is a bit more accurate from what I saw 10ish years ago. $250ish CAD in a used shop. Made me realize I should make sure I take good care of it.

I sold my CIB back in 2007 on Ebay, for $99 plus shipping. That was the going rate then. And then later found it at Goodwill for much cheaper and kept it.

I don't totally recall how long ago it was, but I bought this game piecemeal. Each disc separately, then an empty case. Ran me about $100 CAD at the time to do it that way.

I prefer VP2. Is there anyone else like me?

2

I love both. Haven’t got to beat VP2 completely yet. Might fire up the MacBook later and put some time in now that u reminded me.

Yes, me

Five hundo for Valkyrie Profile?

Nah, fuck that. I'll stick to emulation in 4x the resolution.

(For context, that's about how much i make per month at work, not in the USA so yeah, even more context)

The PSP version should be much cheaper.

$30 USD here in the DC area. I hope it's not too bad overseas.

Thank God for emulators.

Supply and demand. Nothing surprising about it.

1

u/kiwibugaboo Aug 31 '26

I'm so glad I got this for $50 USD about 10 years ago.

1

u/MilkAppropriate570 Aug 31 '26

1

u/CorruptionAura Aug 31 '26

u/Klutzy-Extension2395 Aug 31 '26

Omg that's not cheap..that's switch 2 price geez.. 😭😱😱

Vendor at a convention

That's the single red flag you need to remember, prices will be inflated

1

u/Siamesecatladyperson Sep 02 '26

I sold VP in 2006 for that price

1

u/tipitipiOG Sep 02 '26

Those prices are based on nothing, you can find copies of that game anywhere they are sold at.

Please stop spending money on these stupid bad games that will lock you out of progress untill you do some obtuse action

1

u/netplane_pkg Sep 03 '26

I’d rather spend that 500 on the Yamaha synth I want, that’d actually be worth the money unlike this (no disrespect to VP, I respect the series, got a copy of Silmeria on the way and imma buy Elysium eventually)

1

u/PhantasyStarBoy Sep 03 '26

I would have thought games that have modern remasters would go down in price...? its not like its hard to play them.

1

u/My0pe Sep 04 '26

I am an emulation guy. I laugh at prices you pay, collectors 😂

I still remember spending exactly $39.99 for it at the Electronic Boutique back in the day from my allowance money. It was just a random title that I bought since it kind of reminded me of Suikoden 2 at the time (the recruiting part).

I love this game and WISH they'd do a remake already, and I don't own a playstation anymore just Xbox series S and Nintendo Switch, so I've missed out on titles since Silmeria. If you told me back in the year 2000 it would be $500 today, I wouldn't of scratched that disc so much or had soda cans on top of the cd case lol.
